In a small hallway across from my large pantry, is a much smaller pantry closet custom designed with shelves and dowel rods that I believe were meant for towel hangers. I can imagine that this smaller version of a pantry once held kitchen gadgets and towels and maybe even the kitchen trash can. Honestly, the custom shelves make for a strange configuration in this closet, and with the lack of proper lighting, it definitely could not have been used for food storage.
Taking pictures of this closet is not easy, and in fact I had to open up the doors of the large pantry and stand at the back of it to get a clear view of the smaller pantry closet. The inside of this pantry reaches high above the door frame and it does not have a light inside. So the closet interior is always dark. One day I would love to take down the doors and door frame and make it open shelving, when my home office is finished in another room of course.
As for me, I have converted it into a central information zone for our home. Instead of hiding the trash can in here, I use the lower space for the filing cabinet holding all important bill information, school information, and other important paperwork such as insurance forms and payments. I also have small boxes for envelopes, stamps, and other office supplies. The higher and more shallow shelves now hold an assortment of paper, boxes of glue, and yes, even a storage box for pet medications.
This closet also holds cookbooks, recipes folders, my coupon organizing bag, address books, reusable shopping bags and folders with all of my home project inspirations.
This small closet serves the purpose of multiple needs and functions for our family and we could not find what we needed because it is a cluttered mess.
So what do you do when you are snowed in for nearly a week – you clean out a closet.
This project didn’t require me to go out and purchase new organizing boxes or solutions – I already had what I needed, I had just neglected the closet for so long that it was a nightmare to try and find anything.
In fact, I have to admit, when I started cleaning out the piles of paperwork last week, I found newspaper articles and graduation announcements from my son’s high school graduation – from 2013! Yeah, I really needed to clean out this closet!
With a few hours of work, throwing away lots of stuff, and putting other items in it’s proper place elsewhere in the house, I finally have a much cleaner and organized closet.
And a nice feeling of accomplishment.
