Since the first year of my marriage I have moved, stored, and moved again this plain dark dresser that belonged to my sweet Grandma Rose. Actually, I don’t really know when I inherited this piece, but I do know it has been with me in at least 4 our my homes.
Over time it has become a little rickety and we lost one of the wooden knobs along the way.
For some time I have envisioned it looking better, and so much prettier.
When this month’s contest for The Fab Furniture Flippin’ Contest™ was announced with Pure & Original paints, I just knew the time had come for me to update Grandma Rose’s old dresser and make it pretty again.
To start, I had to do some repair work and glue some of the inner drawer pieces back in place. This dresser has been in my son’s room for the last 8 years, but with his walk-in closet and built-in shelving, he hadn’t actually used or even opened any of the drawers in years. I definitely found some interesting odds and ends from his childhood days in a few of the drawers.
I had ordered two paint colors from Pure & Original for this contest, one in a pale green named Landscape, and the second one an off white color named Old Linen.
I wanted to give the dresser a more modern farmhouse, and elegant vibe, so I started by painting the drawer fronts in the Landscape green. The rest of the dresser I painted in the Old Linen color.
Pure & Original chalk paints are very thick, so I followed their suggestion to add just a few drops of water to the paint before applying it to the dresser. The paint went on like butter and was so smooth. I applied three coats of paint for a fuller coverage.
Pure & Original chalk paint also does not need a wax sealant or finish, but I decided to add a layer of wax to this piece for the added shine and modern feel. Even before I added the wax, the dresser and paint was beautiful though. I also added some slight distressing to the drawer fronts because it just seemed to be what it needed to give it more of a modern, farmhouse vibe.
I found some fabulous replacement knobs in a shiny brass color at Lowe’s.
Grandma Rose’s updated dresser will be part of the overall new design plan for Guest Room 2 (aka our son’s current room). I think Grandma would like the new look.
