Designing a small kitchen was a fun and exciting challenge!
The Bradford Street House’s new kitchen is the smallest and most challenging kitchen design I have ever done. Not to mention the first kitchen where I have ordered all of the cabinets as pre-made boxes from Home Depot.
In the past I have always had a much larger budget, someone else’s money involved, and a custom cabinet shop who could work out the little details to make all of the cabinetry all work together seamlessly. To say I was a little nervous about this new kitchen would be an understatement.

Since most of our free time these days, which is not a lot for two full time working individuals, is spent working on this house or discussing what needs to be done on the Bradford Street House, I decided to share an update on how it is coming along.
Let’s revisit what this kitchen looked like back in July when we purchased the house.
This kitchen is only a 9′ x 13′ room. It truly is just a postage stamp of a kitchen. And because the entire square footage of the house is only 780 square feet, the kitchen also has to house the washer and dryer. It only had this small wall of base cabinets, no dishwasher, and very little character.
After waiting for weeks for our new windows to be installed, we are now finally able to tackle the new layout and design for the kitchen. The old cabinets were removed and hauled away, the washer, dryer, and old stove donated to charity, and the walls have been repaired and painted. The electrical panel has been updated and the wiring moved so that the stove and refrigerator could now be installed on a different walls than in the original photos. New lighting has also been installed.
This past weekend my husband and son installed the new, Dove Gray colored cabinets from Home Depot. I’m finally seeing my vision for a more efficient and usable kitchen coming together.
This next weekend the plan is to install the sink and countertops. We will also be taking advantage of some Black Friday deals to purchase the new stove, hood vent, and dishwasher in the next two weeks.
Of course more work is happening in other rooms of the house at the same time and I will be sharing a full update once the house is completed.
Thanks for much for visiting our first rental house renovation.
2023 Update
We still own the Bradford Street House and for the first time since 2017 it is empty and ready for more improvements. Follow along with those improvements as we share Revisiting the Bradford Street House on the blog.
