If you are in the mood to make some festive red, white, and blue crafts and decor for the July 4th holiday, the week before is the best time to purchase the supplies. Most craft supply stores have their patriotic decorations marked down 50% already and you can find some great deals.
In this post I have included 3 very easy, and inexpensive, ideas to try this year.

At my local Michael’s store, they even had the pre-made arrangements for half off – but at a regular price of $69.99 or higher, I usually find a way to make them myself. I can appreciate and admire them, but I’m too practical and thrifty to pay that price. (Said like a true DIYer of course!)
Project #1
Painted Round Pallet Cutout
For this project you will need:
- Round pallet cutout
- Acrylic Paints
- White Spray Paint
- Ribbons in red, white & blue
- Red burlap ribbon
- Mini Flags
- Patriotic themed flowers
I was able to get the red, white, and blue flowers at half off, around $2.00 a stem. The round cutout was $6.99 but with a 40% off coupon it was a deal.
The round pallet cutout is 8″ in diameter and very rough wood. I didn’t sand it down because I wanted to keep the rustic feel of it, but I did spray on two coats of flat finish white primer.
Next I traced a star template on the wood in a pattern across the cutout. I simply printed the star template shape from my MS Word program (insert star shape) and cut it out.
Next I applied several coats of navy blue acrylic paint around the pattern of stars.
Using the red, white & blue flowers I purchased at Michael’s, I created a bouquet and tied it together with a large red burlap ribbon. The ribbon was left over from a Christmas project, but originally cost $3.99 at Michael’s if I had paid full price. I never shop at Michael’s without a coupon so you know I got the ribbon for a lot less than that.
I attached the bouquet to the pallet cutout with craft wire instead of glue. This way I can remove it and remake this painted pallet another day.
This was such an easy project and only cost around $10 to make.
Project #2
Mini Patriotic Wreath
For this project you will need:
- Patriotic themed ribbon
- Burlap ribbon
- Assorted red, white & blue flowers
- 6″ wire wreath form
For my second project, I took a small 6″ wire wreath and created a mini decorative patriotic wreath to hang with a painted canvas my niece made with the saying “God Bless American”. My niece is very creative and always painting or drawing and when I saw this small sign at my mother’s house I asked to have it. She argued that it wasn’t finished yet but I really liked the simplicity of the black and white sign without any color.
I got the star printed ribbon at Walmart on clearance and of course used the red burlap ribbon from my Christmas stash. I added the last three red, white, and blue flowers I purchased from Michael’s to add a little flare to the small wreath. This is such an easy project and just shows that a wreath doesn’t have to be ginormous to be pretty.
Project #3
USA Banner
For this project you will need:
My last project for the 4th of July holiday included a small fabric banner I found at Walmart in the wedding aisle – yes the wedding aisle.
I had originally purchased this banner for my son’s wedding shower and it has LOVE written on one side. Since I didn’t really need a garland banner that has LOVE written on it for every day, I had my daughter repaint it for the 4th of July holiday.
With some simple lettering and a heart, you can take an inexpensive $5.99 banner and make a red, white and blue patriotic statement. Or paint both sides for several different holidays.
I like how this looks in my screened porch room with the patriotic wreath I made two years ago. The burlap on this wreath used to be white, but time and the weather have aged it a dull yellowy color. It may be remade soon for another holiday too.
So there you have it, 3 easy patriotic themed projects for the upcoming 4th of July holiday that cost me less than $10 each to make. I don’t know about you, but I am someone who usually leaves up my red, white and blue decorations, especially as simple as these are, until Labor Day when I switch over to a Fall them.

I haven’t seen round pallet cutouts. Those are so cool and I love the patriotic paint job you gave it. #HomeMattersParty
All great ideas but I really love the round pallet, even with just the stars! #HomeMattersParty
What great ideas for patriotic decorating! They look beautiful! #HomeMattersParty
Thanks Melissa
The round palette cutout is my favorite. I love that these are quick and easy to make!
Thanks and that is an interesting story. Mine is only a treasure to me… It only says Made in China and the number A26. Locally there are Facebook pages set up for people in an area to sell their stuff. I bought mine from someone for $40 and love it. Thanks again for the response.
Hey Carolyn, thanks for asking. I have always heard them called just Garden Stools. I did not paint it but it does have Oriental themed design all over it. Mine has a label on the bottom that it is from Chelsea House, a high end design studio that you can find online, and was probably purchased from them in the 1990’s. I used to work as an Interior Designer for a high end resort and whenever our team would remodel a cottage, the old furniture and accessories would be put in a warehouse and randomly dispersed to other rooms on the resort, or taken to a consignment store, or given to the employees. As you can imagine when we remodeled a cottage we were soon the most popular staff members around the place. This is one of those random treasures that I had always liked even though it really doesn’t fit with my modern home, but the colors of the piece do so I brought it home around five years or so ago and have used it in several different places in my home. Try looking at the bottom of your version and see if there is a company name to find out more about it.
I saw something in the last picture I am curious about. It is the item sitting between the two chairs. I have something that looks very similar. I do not know what you call them but they are ceramic or glass and I think they are considered to be a (Oriental?) stool of some sort. My question, is did you paint the design or did it originally come with that design on it? Mine definitely has an oriental flower all over design but has the holes in the side like yours.
