This is a project I have wanted to try for some time, but like a lot of my hopeful projects, I buy the supplies and let them sit around for weeks, or years, or I don’t do them at all.
That is something I am trying to change for the rest of this year.
I have sworn off buying new craft supplies, and even visiting thrift stores, until I get more things out of the craft room.
It is going to be hard!
Luckily I have more than enough project supplies to keep my busy for weeks.
To get the motivation going to accomplish this goal, I pulled out a bag of wood beads I purchased months ago on Amazon and finally made this simple wood bead pumpkin. It is so charming in it’s simplicity and design.
For my version of this project I used:
- Wood beads in 20mm and 16mm sizes
- Barked Covered Floral Wire (from my stash)
- Lamb’s Ear Floral Leaves (leftover from my daughter’s wedding)
- Hot glue
- Floral Wire Clippers
Making this simple wood bead pumpkin only took about 20 minutes to complete. That included heating up the hot glue gun and adding on the lamb’s ear leaves.
If you don’t have barked wire available in your stash and don’t want to go shopping, you can also use regular floral wire combined with jute twine or purchase online some pre-wired jute twine. I used the barked floral wire because it was what I already had available and this project helped to use it up.
To start, measure and cut the barked floral wire in 4 pieces that are 24 inches in length each. Obviously for a bigger pumpkin, you would cut a longer piece.
Bend each pieced of the wire in half to create the eight sides of the pumpkin shape. Slide the bent wire pieces around each other at the bend and twist them together to create the bottom of the pumpkin.
The next step is just so easy. Just slide the wood beads on the wires for the sides of the pumpkin.
For my wood bead pumpkin, I decided to use two different sized wood beads because I didn’t have enough of just one size to make my pumpkin and also decided to alternate the beads for every other strand of wire. So I used 10 – 16mm wood beads on 4 different strands and 7 – 20mm wood beads on the other 4 strands.
Depending on the size of the beads you are using, you will figure out how many you need for each strand.
Next, you will bring the ends of the barked wires together at the top and twist them around each other to create the pumpkin shape and the stem for the pumpkin. Using my floral clippers, I trimmed off the ends of the barked wires to make them shorter for the stem.
The final step, glue on a few lamp’s ear leaves, or even Fall colored leaves, to finish off the pumpkin and enjoy.
