Welcome Friends!

I am so glad you are here.

My name is Donna and I live in this modern house in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. I am a wife, mother, Nonna to four precious grandbabies, Christian, Interior Designer, blogger, and aspiring author. I am originally from Eastern North Carolina and lived in Texas before settling in Tennessee. My southern roots run deep.

One of My Favorite Quotes!

“Decorate your home. It gives the illusion that your life is more interesting than it really is.”

Charles M. Schulz

01

In Design school, I fell in love with Mid-Century Modern houses and furnishings. This house allows me the opportunity to fully embrace this iconic style.

02

We bought this home nearly 20 years ago and have been slowly renovating it over time and often on a tight budget. We love this house!

We are now empty-nesters with three dogs and are making a second round of improvements on this house to accomodate our growing brood of grandchildren. We obviously have no plans to downsize anytime soon.

Why I Love What I Do

Where to begin?

As a teenager, my bedroom walls had numerous scuff marks and even more holes from my obsession with moving the furniture around my room. One day, my daddy patiently brought me a sheet of graph paper, a tape measure, and his worn high school T-square and taught me how to lay out a floor plan and cut out drawn-to-scale blocks of every piece of furniture in my room. My passion for interior design was born that day.

More than twenty years later, I finally completed a long journey to earn a degree in Interior Design. After working in the field for years, it would take several more years of long work days to qualify and pass the National Certified Interior Design Qualification Exam.

My biggest lesson during my professional years working in hospitality and high-end design is that it doesn’t matter how much money you spend on a house’s decor if it fails to nurture those who call it home. Second, professional success is worthless if you are expected to choose between your career and your family.

And that is how this blog was born.

Modern on Monticello is a play on words to describe our modern-style house on Monticello Drive. Built in the late 1970s, my home is a unique blend of late-mid-century architecture and a few features from the 1980s and 1990s that haven’t aged as well as we would like.

Since 2007, my husband and I have slowly renovated our home with buckets of sweat and an often tight budget.  We know the thrill of a finished DIY project, the excitement of planning the next DIY project, and the frustrated, messy middle where everything seems to go wrong, take too long, or cost too much money.

But we do love this house.

Our two kids grew up here, and now it is where our growing brood of grandkids comes to visit.

The house is far from done, but we get closer to accomplishing our dream each year.  I hope you stay awhile and get to know us better.

You, My Friend

have come to the right place

Living in and renovating a modern home presents unique challenges in a decor world dominated mainly by FarmHouse and Cottage styles. Thankfully, mid-century-inspired furnishings and decor have grown in popularity in recent years.

However, finding outstanding vintage items often requires extensive thrift store and estate sale shopping. If you want inspiration and ideas for bringing vintage modern style into your home, you have come to the right place.
