Adding Aged Brass To My Home Design

They have caught my eye in every home decor store I have visited lately.

Every little trinket and light fixture is available in aged brass.

In the last few years, a new design approach has emerged that layers different metals together, adding depth, texture, warmth, and modern sophistication to a room.

Aged brass and gold are the metals I am slowly bringing into the mix of metals in my home.ย

Twenty years ago, I was removing brass light fixtures and accessories from the luxury resort I worked at. It was so dated and screamed the 1990s! The wallpaper had to go, too.

Replacing all the “dated” fixtures with new shiny, satin-finished chrome and silver was a beautiful, modern improvement.

It was like a breath of fresh air in every room.ย

As expected, I have followed the same pattern in my home over the years, and satin chrome finishes are everywhereโ€”on the kitchen cabinets, for the lamps, and especially for all of the bath fixtures. I still like the clean, modern look of them all.

Lately, those aged brass fixtures have been calling me to try them again.ย ย

Thankfully, mixing metals has become a more popular trend, and there are so many options available for accessories and fixtures that make it easier than ever to follow this trend in your home.ย

Want some ideas? Let’s look at some of my favorite items in aged brass.

A few guidelines about mixing metals in your home.

Mixing different colored metals may be an excellent way to introduce texture and warmth to a space. Still, in my research, I have discovered a few trusted guidelines for adding mixed metals that I agree are good to consider.

  • Don’t go overboard with too many metal colors in one space. It’s a good idea to have one dominant metal and use a second metal as an accent.
  • Mix metal finishes like polished, matte, brushed, or satin to add visual interest.
  • Keep metals of the same function consistent. For example, all bathroom plumbing fixtures should have the same metal finish.

Some of my favorite metal combinations:

  • Brass and Chrome
  • Satin Nickel and Polished Brass
  • Antique Brass and Matte Black

All these brass combinations above have a more modern look, so of course, they are my favorites.

Previous room makeovers we have tackled in the last few years include our Vintage Style Black and White Bathroom, and our Mid-Century-Modern Inspired Entry.ย

I have started bringing more aged brass into my home design.

In our ongoing master bedroom refresh this year, I have installed peel-and-stick wallpaper as an accent wall behind the bed with tiny gold accents. These vintage gold mirrors, purchased at an estate sale last year, are now the perfect complement to the new bedroom colors, along with the gold handles on the nightstands and the brass on the vintage lamp.ย

We will keep the satin chrome fixtures in the adjoining master bath, but I plan to add brass accents to this room as we continue.

Mixing metals adds charm, texture, and warmth to a room, no matter your home style.ย  Have fun with it.ย
