Alphabet Block Christmas Ornaments
It is once again time for another Creative Craft Hop. This month, I decided to complete one of the projects on my list: repurposing a large box of alphabet blocks I bought at a thrift store this summer.
The first project will be these easy DIY Christmas ornaments personalized for my grandkids.

One box of alphabet blocks – multiple projects
Later this year, I will once again participate in a Christmas tree-decorating fundraiser for our local Children’s Hospital, recently renamed the Dolly Parton Children’s Hospital.
My tree theme will be Santa’s workshop, with a red-and-white color scheme and vintage toys.
The best way to gather the vintage toys I needed for my tree was to spend weeks visiting every local thrift store in our area this summer. One prize I found was a plastic tote filled with alphabet blocks in different sizes and colors for only $4.99.

I have at least four projects planned for these blocks. These easy-to-make Christmas ornaments are the first ones I am sharing.
After sorting the blocks by size and paint style, I selected four of the larger 2 inch blocks with the initials of my four grandkids – H, D, M, and K.

For this project you will need a ruler, pencil, a drill with a small drill bit, screw eyes, open jump rings for jewelry making, thin ribbon, and hanging ornaments or bells. Small pliers for jewelry making is also helpful but you can still make these ornaments by hand if needed.
Before inserting a screw eye into the top or bottom of the alphabet block, I have an easy way to find the center of the block. Lay your ruler across the top of the block from corner to corner. Draw a small line across the block at that measurement. Repeat the same process from the opposite side of the block. The X marks the center of the block and where you will drill the hole for the screw eye.

Drill a center hole on the top and bottom of the block, making sure that the letter that you want displayed on the future ornament is in the right direction.

Insert a screw eye in both holes in the top and bottom of the block. Attach the smaller ornament to the bottom screw eye, using a jewelry-making open jump ring if needed.

Below the alphabet blocks, I wanted to hang a cute character, a bell, or another small Christmas ornament. So I visited a local Hobby Lobby and the aisle filled with My Little Christmas decorations. These tiny Christmas tree decorations are the perfect size, and at already half off, an even better bargain.

I may or may not have spent more than I planned, but I have two more projects in the works I can use this for. I will be sharing those projects over the next few weeks.

My grandsons’ initial block ornaments feature tiny, glitter-covered dinosaurs. My granddaughters both get petite pigs and hippos in tutus. So adorable.
The last step is to tie a ribbon or twine at the top and thread it through the top screw eye.

Don’t Forget To Pin It!

More than enough to share with a friend
A coworker of mine asked if I could make some for her grandkids with their initials. I didn’t have all their initials available in the 2-inch blocks, but I was able to make four with the standard 1-inch blocks, with large bells hanging underneath.

This “toys” alphabet block ornament is just the first of many planned for my Santa’s Workshop tree. I am also considering crafting a decorative garland using these blocks.
