Americana Inspired Wreath For Summer Decor

Now that the Summer months have arrived, it was past time that I brought out my favorite Summer decorations all in red, white, and blue. It has also been a few years since I made a new Americana-inspired wreath. Borrowing an idea shared with me by a friend, I purchased the supplies I thought I would need to attempt to make my version of a Patriotic wreath using Dollar Tree red, white, and blue metal garden stakes.

What I first envisioned for how my finished wreath would look is far from how it finally came together.

I remade this wreath four times until I liked it.

Starting with Memorial Day in May, through the Fourth of July, and Labor Day, my home is filled with decorative accents that are always Patriotic decorations.  The vibrant colors for each holiday celebration in red, white, and blue are perfect to leave up all Summer. Patriotic wreaths are one of my favorite ways to add a touch of Americana to these decorative accents.  This is why I continue to make new versions every few years.

As I shared in the beginning, a friend shared an idea with me for a wreath made with metal garden stakes and starburst-shaped flowers in Patriotic colors. Never one to shy away from trying something new for wreath inspiration, I bought similar supplies at Dollar Tree to attempt a version of my own. 

After removing the colorful metal flowers from the metal rods using determination and clippers, I quickly discovered that attaching them to a metal round wreath form was not the best idea. After trying two different types of glue, including hot glue, the metal flowers fell off both times. Since this idea was impossible, I shifted creative gears and tried to make the wreath another way using the same supplies.

 My second attempt to wrap cut strips of Dollar Tree mesh ribbons around the wire frame as a base layer underneath the metal flowers did not work out like I hoped. Not only did I not have enough mesh ribbon to fill the wreath form, but I also didn’t like how the combination of ribbons looked!

Idea number two was quickly discarded.

Trying out wreath idea number three.

For wreath idea number three, I started with new craft supplies.  I discarded the metal wreath form for a straw one.  The previous mesh ribbons were replaced with a roll of white burlap ribbon, and three matching mesh ribbons with red, white, and blue stripes purchased from a second trip to Dollar Tree.

For wreath style number three, the straw wreath form was used, wrapped halfway with white burlap ribbon underneath the metal flowers. The other half was heavily decorated with gathered strips cut from the red, white, and blue mesh ribbon.  

It’s good that I hadn’t permanently attached any of the ribbon or metal flowers for the third attempt at making an Americana-inspired wreath, because I didn’t like how this one looked either.   

Finally, I stopped trying to make a wreath I thought others would like and decided to make one I knew I would appreciate hanging outside my side entrance.

I wrapped the other half of the straw wreath form in more white burlap ribbon. Then, it was easy to attach the red, white, and blue metal flowers by slipping the shortened rod underneath the folds of the burlap ribbon and securing them with hot glue.

 A charming accent of a seeded garland in red, white, and blue was wrapped around the wreath form and between each metal flower. A vintage blue truck sign from Dollar Tree was added on the left side.

The final little touch was to gather some of the previously cut strips of red, white, and blue mesh in the middle with a blue pipe cleaner to create a whimsical bow accent to the wreath.

This fourth version of a wreath using Patriotic metal flower garden stakes is a keeper.

Wreath idea number four may have won, but I still have a problem.

I can’t even hang it outside near the side entrance like I have done for years!

We are currently having the exterior of our home transformed with new vinyl siding, and the trusty nail outside the side entrance that I have used for 16 summers is gone.

I have to laugh at the irony of struggling to make a new Summer wreath, only to realize I can’t even hang it up until the exterior work is done, and until I find a new way to hang this wreath and any future wreaths on vinyl siding. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The construction crew will be done in the next few weeks, and hopefully, I can hang up this wreath at the side entrance to enjoy. I can put all my patio furniture back on the deck. Until then, I will start on the next project on my to-do list.
