Did you know that April is National Decorating Month? Spring is the perfect time to be inspired to spruce up your home. Either the interior or the exterior. It doesn’t matter as long as you are inspired to be creative and change the scenery around you. Of course this year the pandemic has forced us all to stay home for safety and health concerns but that doesn’t mean you can’t find just a few small ways to spruce up your home this month.

I am a decorating magazine junkie. I have a lot of subscriptions and enjoy every single one of them each month and get excited when they arrive in the mail.
I really enjoy my subscription to HGTV Magazine. Each time a copy of the magazine arrives I pour through the pages at least twice in one sitting. I rush through it so fast on the first time just because I want to take it all in immediately. Then I slow down, and reread through the monthly issue again more slowly, actually reading the articles the second time around, and learn things.
Since April is National Decorating Month and Spring just inspires all of us to start sprucing up our homes after a long dark and dreary Winter (this one seemed to drag on forever and then the pandemic hit), I thought it would be great to share some great ways to add the new colors to your home this Spring.
Spruce Up Your Home With Color

One of the quickest and easiest ways to spruce up you home for Spring is to add some color.
Of course painting the walls in a room a new color will have the instant impact you are looking for. Sometimes you still love the color you have on the walls but you are just looking to change things up a bit and create a new focal point or accent in a room. These days that is so easy to do with a few simple changes.
I would like to say here that there is nothing wrong with a neutral and subdued palette. I actually prefer that more and more for my basic wall color. It is timeless and classic and goes with any decor theme. However, when it comes to furniture and accessories, I like color. Bright oranges, yellows and blues are my favorites and you can change them out every season without breaking the bank account.
So where do you start?
This year I started by making a pretty tulip wreath for my mantel and cheerful little jars filled with floral stems. It was simple, so very easy, and immediately brighten up the space.
Shopping may be a challenge these days but thankfully you can order just about anything online, including paint.
To change the feel of a room, start by adding some colorful artwork on the wall. This is also something you can make yourself if needed but not necessary. There are so many beautiful and affordable options for artwork and decor available online and at some of the more popular home decor stores such as At Home, Kirklands, Better Homes and Gardens, Wayfair and Ikea, just to name a few.

Second, change out the small things like pillows and vases. Displaying small pops of color in a room makes the eye travel across the entire room and take in the entire impression of your style and personality.

In the last few years I have slowly been updating the rooms in my home, one project at a time, and to create a more cohesive look, we have painted each connecting room in the same shade of white. I like the neutral backdrop to for the rooms to flow together. There are a few exceptions of course like the half wall of burnt orange color in my dining room. By using the same basic neutral shade of white on all of the walls, I can allow some fun pops of color to stand out in the furniture and accessories. Such as my bright yellow coffee table.
There are so many ways you can create a pop of color in a room.
Below is a quick list of 20 of them:
- Colorful new lamps
- Pillows
- Vases
- Throws and blankets
- Decorative serving trays
- Desk accessories
- Faux plants and flowers
- Real plants and flowers
- Decorative and colorful animal statues
- Framed artwork from your kids
- Small accent tables
- Colorful baskets
- Drinking glasses
- Picture frames
- Candles
- Planters
- Area rugs
- Stools
- Trinket boxes
- Books
Are you wondering what to do if you actually still like and enjoy the pillows and accessories you already have?
That is great. You already have the color foundation you enjoy. To spruce up your space with color you can easily just rotate your accessories from room to room, or just to a different space in the same room. The effect of moving the pop of color to a different space will have the same effect as adding something new. The room will feel energized and different all at the same time.
A bright bouquet of flowers is an instant perk for any room. Just add a small bouquet to your next online grocery pickup order and enjoy them for days. It will also lift your spirits and mood at the same time.
