Checklist Update For Our 1970s Bathroom Renovation On A Budget
Here we are at Week 5 of the One Room Challengeยฎ and honestly, I don’t have these amazing photos to share to wow you with what we have been doing.
Today, the bathroom is wrapped from ceiling to floor in plastic sheets and still covered in a thick layer of ceiling dust.
Since we are just beyond the halfway point in this challenge, I figured Week 5 was a good time to update the checklist on where we are in the vintage 1970s bathroom renovation project.
This post contains affiliate links that help to support this blog at no additional cost to you. I share them in the hope that you find something inspiring and wonderful for your home through them.
Last week I decided to skip writing an update post for Week 4 and instead, I am combining it with Week 5 because writing about ceiling dust and repairs is about as exciting as watching paint dry.
I will save us both from the drudgery of those details.
The budget is always the most important factor in creating the bathroom of your dreams.
We have waited a long time to see the completion of this renovation project.
Since it is a guest bathroom, the budget this time around is much smaller than the cost of a full bathroom remodel.
We are saving those pennies for remodeling goals for the master bath and a secondary bath with the most daily use.
The bathroom remodel checklist for those two bathrooms will have a significant difference in the remodel goals, the design style, and the total price tag compared to our current project which has many minor changes to the finishes and style but with a big impact.
We will hire a general contractor to complete those two bathroom remodeling projects to achieve a dream bathroom with a walk-in shower, more storage space, and a free-standing tub. The design decisions will accommodate grab bars for a more functional bathroom in the future if we decide to age well in our home.
The limited budget led to the decision-making process for how we are working to achieve a fresh new look for this 1970s bathroom.
Most of this bathroom renovation budget has been saved by shopping for new fixtures and finishes at our local home improvement store. We are using materials left over from other projects such as the sink faucet, and the same paint color from another room off the same hallway.
The final paint color choice is the same color we used in our laundry room makeover a few years ago so we are able to stretch the budget even more by using up what we already have.
Even though I am not sharing these exciting images showcasing this amazing jaw-dropping transformation on a budget today, it doesn’t mean that things are not being accomplished in the background.
While my husband has been diligently working to create a smooth ceiling surface in this bathroom, I am working on the other items on our to-do list for the final touches to pull together the envisioned bathroom design.
These behind-the-scenes tasks include ordering the supplies for the next phase of this makeover for the bath vanity cabinet and shopping for just the right piece of furniture to fit against the longest wall of this room. Sourcing some modern-inspired peel-and-stick wallpaper for a surprise wall feature in the closet has taken some time, but so has visiting thrift stores to find an old piece of art with the perfect frame to repurpose for our wall art idea.
So here is an update of what our to-do list looks like:
Spring 2024 One Room Challenge Task List
New vintage style black and white hexagon tile flooringNew light fixtures at the vanityNew lighted mirror to replace old medicine cabinetRemove the popcorn ceilingReplace the old-style exhaust fan and light fixture in the ceilingRemove the old wooden benchRepair and paint the walls in a gray colorPaint all black trim in whitePaint closet doors in whiteNew towel bars and hooks- Repair and paint the vanity cabinet
- Vinyl wrap on the current black laminate top – ordered
- New sink faucet
- New art and accessories in a vintage style – in progress
- New upholstered bench along the long wall
- Repair the shower door so it stays closed
- Surprise closet update
Sourcing just the right bench for the room has been a challenge.
Before I even started this bathroom makeover project, I envisioned a new upholstered bench in place of the DIY version that this room had before.
The color choice for the fabric has often changed in my mind. A bright shocking yellow would look amazing in a black and white bathroom, but so would a soft blush of pink, or the classic hue of navy.
The legs of this bench would be modern in black or silver to blend with the colors of the room and the silver tone of the new towel bars and light fixtures we had already picked out.
Even though I envisioned the look of the bench, finding something to fit all of those needs, on a tight budget, has proven to be more of a challenge than I expected.
Most modern-inspired upholstered benches on the market have gold-colored legs. They look stunning, but will not blend with the aesthetics of the bathroom I have designed.
Or they were too pricey for the budget I have left to spend. The majority of the budget for this makeover has been spent on the new tile for the flooring so some of the more decorative items planned are in jeopardy of not happening if we don’t stick to our predetermined budget.
The next project will be the vanity cabinet makeover.
The vanity cabinet makeover project will begin with a glossy new coat of paint and a vinyl wrap for the countertop as soon as the ceiling dust is cleaned up this week.
I am a little nervous about installing a vinyl wrap on a countertop for the first time so I hope it works. With a nod to the overall budget, we decided that the best option for a makeover of the vanity top was to try a vinyl wrap instead of painting or replacing the old countertop.
So there you have it. We are at the midpoint of this challenge and we feel like we are on track to finish this project strong and on time.
Looking forward to sharing more next week,

Ephesians 6:14-17 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
