Cozy and Modern Winter Decor After Christmas

After the trees, lights, and colorful sparkle of Christmas have been removed and stored away for another year, I find that people react differently to their home interiors at this time of year.

Either you breathe a deep sigh of relief as you settle back into the familiar decor of your spaces.

Or you stare dismally at the spot where such festive decor once stood and yearn for some type of seasonal decorationโ€”something cozy and comforting to get you through winter’s dark and shorter days.

If you are a homeowner in the latter category and want to transform your home into a more cozy environment during the winter months, let’s look at some steps and ideas to help you do that.

First, some easy steps.

Transitioning your home from festive Christmas to a wintery look is easy by following a few simple steps.

  1. Remove and pack away everything that reminds you of Christmas decorations.  However, if you have some Christmas items that have more of a winter vibe, such as greenery, or natural elements like wood, burlap, or even items that have neutral colors like white, brown, or black, then keep those out to reuse as winter decor.
  2. Clean the surfaces or spaces where Christmas once sat, and start the area with a clean slate.
  3. Start by adding layers of textures with soft pillows and warm throw blankets in fuzzy fabrics.
  4. Accent your new or repurposed winter-season decor with white candles and winter greenery and faux garlands.
  5. Bring in natural elements if possible.  Even a small bowl with pinecones or a vase filled with twigs will bring in a layer of texture and warmth to a space.
  6. Add seasonal winter decor items like snowmen, snowflakes, deer, woodland creatures, and whatever little accents help you make it your style.

That last step can be a challenge for me.

Why, you might ask?

My home is modern, and the vintage-loving, mid-century girl in me wants the interiors of my house during the winter months to reflect the aesthetics of my style. Not just what the current popular trend is.

But modern decorations, although beautiful with their clean lines and simple style, don’t always give off a cozy winter vibe.

So this year, I challenged myself to find a way to give my readers, who may also be in the same dilemma as me, a source for items and accessories for a winter look in modern winter decor blended with the coziness of traditional winter decor.

let Us Start By looking at some pillows.

I don’t know about you, but I usually change out my pillows for each season.  I also have large dogs and toddler grandchildren, so what I pick must be durable and cozy for the winter season.

I like my pillows to be fun and bring in some unexpected charm and whimsy.

If you are unsure of what seasonal colors to use for winter, you can never go wrong with the mix of icy blues and gray, the stark contrast between black and white, or the soft colors of winter greens mixed with rustic natural browns.

I keep throw blankets in the living room all year, but in different textures and weights depending on the season.

Cold winter nights are perfect for snuggling on the couch underneath a warm, fuzzy throw blanket. My choices must also be washable because no matter how hard I try to keep them away from the dogs, I somehow catch them snoozing on them before the winter months are over.

White candles are a must for winter decorations, but I can also imagine that black, deep greens and silver would also look stunning during the winter.  The allure is the comfort of the warm glow but the scent of the candle is just as important.  For the winter months, I enjoy the scent of pine, winterberry, and marshmallows.

Change over to a winter wreath.

Don’t forget about the entrance to your home as well.  A beautiful winter wreath not only greets you every day but also creates a welcoming and warm atmosphere right at the door.

Accessories and winter themes.

So, the most challenging part of decorating for winter in a modern home for me is finding and displaying seasonal accents that suit the space.  Over time, I have found that the best way to mix accents in a modern home is to be more minimalistic. A trio of tiny little snowmen on a shelf has more of a statement than 10 snowmen throughout a room.

Less is more.  Keep it simple.  Stick to one favorite winter theme.

This part should be fun, and any style of accent will work. Whether you prefer cute snowmen, gnomes, dogs, or even woodland creatures, all will work in a modern home. Start slow and be patient as you add in the accent pieces. You don’t have to fill every empty space.

In reality, the purpose of decorating for winter is not to compete with the previous Christmas season with all its glitter and sparkle. I believe it is more of a time to slow down, lean into comfort first, and let our homes and minds rest for a few weeks because Spring is coming with a burst of new energy for both inside and out.
