DIY Bunny Crafts With Dollar Tree Mini Foam Bunnies

Faux floral arrangements and wreaths filled with pastel colors are usually a part of my Spring decorating and this year was no exception.  This year’s selections not only repurposed and tweaked a few older arrangements, but also filled my vintage tiered tray with a selection of faux flowers in different colors. 

Once I completed the floral arrangements, I enhanced them with simple, budget-friendly miniature foam bunnies I had impulsively picked up at my local Dollar Tree. 

In this post, I will share a few simple techniques to give these miniature foam bunnies a faux velvet flocking texture, a unique beaded style, and a covering of miniature paper flowers.

Before I started the floral decorations, I had impulsively purchased a small bag of miniature foam bunnies from my local Dollar Tree. I knew they could be adorable bunny crafts for my Spring decor.

Researching inspiration on Pinterest literally sent me down a rabbit hole of ideas. I finally settled on a few easy craft ideas to make DIY faux flocked bunnies, beaded bunnies, and floral covered bunnies. 

Joining the flocked bunny craze

The current viral flocked bunny craze provides more than one store where I can purchase a rainbow of flocked bunnies in all shapes and sizes. I can even pay as low as $1 for miniature flocked bunny stems at Walmart.  

It was a very tempting alternative.

I picked up a few larger flocked bunnies for my mantel. But when it came to the miniature ones, I talked myself out of them because I already had more than enough miniature bunnies to use.   

The creative side of my brain sided with the practical side, agreeing that since I already had a package of miniature bunnies, they would end up in a future donation box if I didn’t use them. 

So why not figure out how to inexpensively apply a velvety texture to a few miniature bunnies at home for my Spring tiered tray. 

Below are the easy steps to achieve just that.

Before trying this technique, I shopped for commercially available flocking on the craft market.  At nearly $10 per container, my simple investment of less than $1 for baking soda works out beautifully. 

 My budget version of faux flocking can be achieved in 7 easy steps. 

1. Insert a bamboo skewer through the bottom of the foam bunny.
2. Apply a coat of acrylic paint and allow to dry for at least an hour.
3. Apply a second coat of paint, making sure to avoid lumps and streaks in the paint.
4. While the second coat of paint is still wet, apply a generous amount of baking soda all over the foam bunny.  Do not shake off the excess baking soda.
5. Either insert the bottom of the bamboo skewer in foam to keep the bunny upright to dry or place the stem inside a tall glass while the baking soda cures in the paint.
6. Allow the paint and baking soda mixture to dry several hours or even overnight.
7. Once dry, use a craft brush to gently remove the excess baking soda from the surface of the painted bunny. You should now have a colorful, textured miniature bunny.

Of course the faux texture on this DIY version isn’t as thick and heavy as one you could buy in the store, but you still end up with a visually velvet faux flocking texture for an adorable bunny. I made six different colors of miniature flocked bunnies to use in a floral arrangement as part of my Spring mantel decor.

In keeping with my personal challenge to decorate my vintage tiered tray for every season this year, I was inspired by a video to fill the two levels of the tray with a faux floral arrangement.  The last detail my Spring tiered tray needed was some adorably decorated bunnies for accents. 

The last two miniature foam bunnies took much longer to decorate than the simple craft of flocking, but I wanted to see how they would look if I decorated the last of the adorable little bunnies differently. 

So, I tried two simple projects: covering one miniature bunny with tiny beads and another with little paper flowers.

The beaded version required extra work and a couple of days to complete, as the tacky glue dried in sections.

In my experience, hot glue and foam don’t mix well so I used a small tube of Quick Hold Tacky glue.  Even then, steady hands and a pair of tweezers were required to attach each bead one by one.  

I would work on one side, lay the bunny down to keep the beads from sliding off while that section dried, then come back later to apply more tacky glue and beads to another side and repeat the process until the miniature bunny was eventually covered in beads.   

Despite the extra work, I like how it turned out. 

Unfortunately, I ran out of beads to cover the bottom of the foam bunny, but I was relieved I had enough to cover most of it. I painted the bottom and quickly filled in any gaps around the beads by combining a couple of acrylic paints to match the bead colors. 

The variegated pink paper flowers took just minutes to glue to the foam bunny.  They are much lighter than the beads and required less glue.   After overlapping the flowers and covering all sides of the bunny, I added more small beads for the eyes and the tail. 

Both methods created such a cute bunny craft.

The beaded blue bunny and the pink paper flower bunny are the perfect accents in my Spring tiered tray display.

Any one of these three ideas would be a fun craft for kids.  However, the beaded bunny may not be the best idea for little kids who may not have the fine motor skills needed to glue tiny beads to the foam bunny without adult assistance. But I know they would have fun with the baking soda and paint!
