Dog Paw Wreath for Spring

There is just something about the early days of Spring that makes us want to refresh our homes. I am speaking from experience, of course. It is also the perfect time to make a Spring wreath for your front door. My choice this year was a dog paw wreath.

In our house, dogs rule—all four of them. As an avid dog lover, I have wanted to make a wreath for our door in the shape of a dog paw for some time. It is actually very easy to make with just a combination of different-sized grapevine wreaths.

This year I made several Spring wreaths – and gave most of them away! 

Now that the weather is finally turning a bit warmer, I ironically find myself in need of a new Spring wreath for my front door. So, of course, it was a great time for me to create a wreath design I have wanted to make for some time: a dog-paw wreath!

We have a house full of dogs, three rescue dogs and one very active pure breed German Shepherd.

This wreath design on my door should come as no surprise to anyone who visits my home and knows our love for dogs.

And what better flower to use on a dog-paw-shaped wreath than dogwood blossoms, just in time for the Spring and Easter season!

I ordered a pack of grapevine wreaths from Amazon, which included two 12″ wreaths and four 6″ wreaths. These were the perfect sizes for making a dog paw wreath. 

For this project I used:

• 12″ grapevine wreath
• 4 – 6″ grapevine wreaths
• Hot glue gun and glue
• Floral Wire
• Decorative Ribbon
• Dogwood Floral Stems
• Greenery Floral Stems
• Chenille Stems (pipe cleaners)
• Pliers for cutting floral wire

I actually found these Spring dogwood floral stems I used at Joanns during their Spring floral sales.  So many were so pretty for a Spring wreath but the dogwoods were my favorite. 

To start the wreath, I first placed the four 6″ small wreaths along the edge of one of the 12″ wreaths to find the right placement. Then, using cut pieces of floral wire, I started to wire them together.

I was making this wreath with a group of friends for a wreath-making day, and one of them showed me this easy way to connect all of the wreaths together. It was so much easier than I had planned.

By cutting small pieces of floral wire long enough to loop over and then thread the edges through the twigs of one wreath through another, the wreaths fit snuggly together without moving.

A small wire is looped through each small wreath to the one next to it, and then all four of them are wired to the bigger 12″ wreath the same way.  

Inserting the wires through the twigs of each wreath and wiring them together makes each one fit snug and tight. In the picture above, you can’t even see the wires holding them together. 

I definitely learned something new working with friends this time around, as one of them came up with the best idea for attaching the grapevine wreaths together.

The placement of the greenery and dogwood flowers came next, so before I glued them down, I played around with the placement of the greenery and flowers.

Once I had attached the flowers and greenery to the top portion of the wreath—along with the smaller ones—I decided to make the bow and attach it before continuing with the flowers.

I recently visited Michaels, where I found several rolls of spring-colored ribbon to use for wreaths. I couldn’t decide which one to use for this dog paw wreath, so I took a picture of all the rolls and asked my daughter and a few friends. We all finally decided to go with the checkered pattern ribbon.

A must-have for any Spring wreath, whether for your front door or over the mantel, is soft colors and pastels. The fresh and beautiful colors of Spring are beautiful on a front door entrance.

To make a bow, I pulled out my favorite wreath making tool, the Deluxe EZ Bowmaker, and created the bow.  This bow maker comes with an easy to follow instruction booklet to create some beautiful wreaths. 

After attaching the bow to the wreath were I wanted it, I then continued to use my hot glue gun and attached more greenery and dogwood flowers to the lower portion of the wreath around the bow. 

All of the greenery and flowers were attached with hot glue.  The bow is attached to the wreath with chenille stems.
