Easy Fall Door Hanger Instead Of A Wreath

With this easy DIY project, I broke away from my usual seasonal wreath tradition and created a stunning DIY Fall door hanger instead.

Every year, I make a new Fall wreath.  It is one of my traditions. 

The changing colors of the Smoky Mountains inspire me to buy new Fall florals and make things to add to my growing Fall decor collection.

Every once in a while though, it is fun to try something different, and what better place to do that than to make and display new Fall door decor that you have to look at every day when you come home. 

Another forgotten decor item in my stash.

It started with a small ladder in my decor stash that I didn’t know what to do with.  And a desire to make something different for a Fall door decoration instead of another wreath.

Don’t get me wrong, I love making wreaths.  I am already thinking about new wreath ideas for Christmas.  There is just so many fun and inspiring choices out there this year. 

When I need to get out of a crafting rut, I love trying something new and this ladder door hanger checks off those boxes for creativity and stepping out of my comfort zone.

Below is the supply list for making a similar DIY Fall Ladder Door Hanger in just a couple of minutes.

• Small wooden ladder
• Hot glue gun and glue sticks
• Fall Floral Stems
• Jute Twine
• Fall Ribbons
• Small Metal Seasonal Sign

My wooden ladder is only 15 inches tall and a perfect size to hang in the place of a wreath at my side entrance.  Similar small wooden ladders, also called tea towel ladders are available at Hobby Lobby and Etsy.

Before I even attempted to add a floral bundle to the small ladder, I needed to figure out how to hang it.  Several attempts later, I found that the ladder didn’t lean to one side or the other if the jute twine was tied around the two side rails and then looped underneath the top rung.

Fall Craft Stash

In late summer, I handpicked individual floral stems from top retailers like Hobby Lobby, At Home, Walmart, and Michaels. The carefully curated bouquet of stems I used to create this ladder door hanger were thoughtfully selected to complement each other perfectly.

If you’re a crafter and you’ve stumbled upon my blog once or twice, you’ll know that I have a bit of a weakness for collecting craft supplies, especially ribbons. My addiction is so strong that I often pick up ribbons that I fancy, even without any specific project in mind. This year several beautiful rolls of Fall colored ribbon caught my eye during one of my Hobby Lobby browsing trips. I couldn’t resist the charming stripes in shades of rust and golden yellow. I loved it so much that I also grabbed two other widths of ribbons in the same color scheme just in case I wanted blend them together.

The golden yellow ribbon was used in the floral arrangements I shared previously, and the deep rust-colored ribbon became part of my daughter’s wedding bouquet.  None of these projects were what I planned to use the ribbon for, but that is okay.  I do wish that I had bought two of each roll though. 

I decided to embellish one side of the tea towel ladder with a petite bouquet of Fall colored stems and ribbon. But as I stepped back to admire my creation, I couldn’t help but feel like it was missing something, even before I added the bow I had made.

When you work part-time in a year-round Christmas boutique, that also carries seasonal treasures, it was easy to pick up the perfect little gem to complete my ladder wall hanger –  an adorable tin welcome sign.  The last step was a quick application of hot glue to attach the small sign to the ladder and my new Fall door hanger was ready to go on display.

This project was different for me but now have a beautiful Fall door hanger to enjoy through the rest of the Fall decorating season.
