Easy Ideas To Make DIY Spring Wreaths With Tulip Stems

In late February, the promise of warmer weather and longer days always inspires me to start thinking about creating new Spring decor for my home and outdoor spaces. 

And of course, a new gorgeous Spring wreath with plenty of Spring flowers to hang at the front door is the first on my list to start searching for new ideas.  

A couple of years ago, I fell in love with the beautiful array of the small faux tulip stems available in a rainbow of colors in the craft stores in late winter each year.

Giving in to this love of these small tulip stems, I have creatively made several different and colorful Spring Tulip Wreaths over the years that I am sharing as a collection of ideas for your vision for a new wreath.

I have to admit I went a bit overboard on Spring Tulip stems – and wreaths – several years ago. 

The beautiful small tulip stems that are usually available at Michael’s Craft Store in February are just too much to resist for someone like me who loves making DIY Spring wreaths each year.

A few years ago,  I went all in and tried out several different styles of wreaths I have been wanting to make for some time. 

Of course, tulip stems make for a pretty Spring wreath no matter what style you like for your home. 

But any wreath that is made with lush faux florals, beautiful bright colored ribbons, and faux greenery for accent, and you have the perfect combination for your own Spring wreath.

If you have missed the annual sale of rainbow-inspired tulip stems at Michaels, as I did this year, you can also find some great selections at Amazon or your local dollar store as well.

This post is a bit different from my usual DIY post with step-by-step photos and instructions.  This time I just really wanted to share these wreaths for inspiration for you to go out and make one for yourself.  In all, I made five different styles of tulip wreaths. 

I hope you enjoy all of these colorful tulip wreaths complimented with beautiful ribbons to match. 

The first Spring tulip wreath I made was featured on my fireplace mantel for at least two years for the Spring season and it remains as one of my favorites ever since.

I have collected so many easy DIY wreath pins on Pinterest over the years of all the different variations and styles that I like using these small tulip stems found mostly at Michael’s craft store.  The question that comes up each year is deciding on which easy DIY Spring wreath to create out of all that I keep pinning.

The answer – as many of them as I can!  And that is exactly what I did for this post.

To make these easy DIY wreaths, you will need some type of wreath form, either a Styrofoam one or a grapevine form, chenille stems for the wreath hanger, a roll of green floral wire, and a hot glue gun and glue sticks.

Since the tulip stems come in a bunch, each small stem will need to be off the bunch before making each different wreath.  The smaller stems are easier to work with.

In case you were wondering, all of these wreaths did not end up in my home. 

Even for me, that is way too many tulip wreaths on display.

One was sent to my son and daughter-in-law’s new home, one for my daughter’s home, and one for my mom’s front porch.  After that, one was given to a close friend for her birthday, and a few were given to the women’s ministry at our church. 

Making these many different styles of Spring tulip wreaths was not only fun, but for me, the creative process of just getting to work with my hands is like therapy, but much cheaper than actual therapy.  

The first Spring tulip wreath I made was a rainbow-inspired one. 

I followed the same techniques I used to make my first Spring tulip wreath.  Using ribbon in a coordinating color, I wrapped a 12-inch Styrofoam wreath form with a coordinating colored ribbon while inserting the tulip stems between each fold of the ribbon and holding it in place with hot glue. 

Since I wanted the tulips to create a rainbow pattern, it took some effort and several remakes to get the balance of colors just right.  It was worth it to end up with a fun and colorful floral wreath.

Spring Tulip Wreath- take two!

I made two more tulip wreaths using a grapevine wreath form.

The easiest type of wreath to make in my opinion is by using a simple grapevine wreath form. 

Since you can add artificial flowers and faux greenery by just inserting them through the twigs of the grapevine form to create the look it makes for a quick and easy DIY wreath.  Attach a bow created with beautiful ribbon and floral wire and it is done in just a few minutes. 

No glue is needed to make this type of wreath unless you want to add it for extra durability, but it is nice to be able to change out the faux flowers and ribbons for a different season and reuse the grapevine form again if you want. 

Featured above is the pink tulip version of this type of wreath.  I made the same style in purple tulips for my mom because purple is her favorite color. 

After cutting up the tulip stems, just slide the stems through the twigs of the grapevine wreath in whatever pattern you like.  Attach a coordinating bow with floral wire or pipe cleaners and the wreath is done.

So just imagine this wreath with purple tulips and a white bow and you will have a mental picture of the wreath I gave to my mom but forgot to photograph. 

A third option for a DIY Spring wreath idea is to use a metal hoop wreath form.

I had these silver and gold metal hoop forms in my craft stash, so I also decided to make a couple of metal hoop tulip wreaths for a more modern version of a Spring tulip wreath.

Using floral wire, attach the tulip stems to the metal hoop by twisting the floral wire around and around the floral stem and the metal hoop to hold the stem in place.  Each time you add another floral stem, continue to wrap another piece of floral wire around all of the stems. 

Add a bow with more floral wire and the wreath is done!

On a side note, two of the bows I used were pre-made bows from Michael’s.  I don’t usually buy pre-made bows because I have the EZ Deluxe Bowmaker and make my own. 

However, when I stocked up my cart at Michaels with all my colorful tulip goodness, I noticed the bright Easter ribbons and bows on display.  I liked the colorful plaid ribbon used for these bows but they didn’t have the ribbon available in a roll anymore.  So I broke down and bought the pre-made bows anyway.

For my more modern tulip wreaths, I used gold and silver metal hoops, and bright blue and green tulip stems. The green tulip wreath features a double hoop.

In all, I made five new Spring tulip wreaths and had so much fun mixing the colors and the different styles.  I hope this post provides you with lots of inspiration to make your own.
