This little outdoor glass top side table was a $3 church rummage sale purchase many years ago. Twice now I have been able to give it a simple and easy makeover at no cost except for what I already had in my craft room stash.
Follow along as I show you where it started, share a photo of the makeover it got the first time, and now how it has been transformed again for an easy no-cost makeover for an outdoor glass top side table.

Don’t you just love a good furniture makeover story?
Especially for those random items that have a great function and purpose but cost very little. Then as your home decor and design styles change over the years, this item can easily be transformed again at no cost to save you money and you continue to get a lot of use out of it.
And the best part, it still looks amazing with each new version of itself!
This project is in fact one of two DIY projects for outdoor side table plans for our new decks.
Now that our new decks have been built, I have been busy working on furnishing them and making both of them inviting and comfortable. When you add more seating areas, each one needs a little side table to hold your morning coffee or a friend’s sweet tea during a bbq event.
Every outdoor space needs a DIY patio table for some extra charm in my opinion. A conversation piece that you can proudly say to yourself “I made that!”.
Even though my little outdoor table was a rummage sale find, I have seen similar tables at thrift stores and even Walmart over the years. Acquiring a thrift store find similar to this glass-top table shouldn’t be a problem for your own version of this project.
A few of the tables shown below were the inspiration for my DIY side table project.
Here is what my table looked like in the very beginning.
The first DIY side table makeover of this table that I shared, way back in 2013, had the top covered in small 1-inch colored tile pieces in the shape of a cross. My daughter put the design together and I just glued each and every little tile piece down with clear Gorilla Glue. I had intended to grout the top but never actually got around to it.
So glad now that I didn’t because the tiles were so much easier to remove with just the glue holding them in place. Over the last couple of years, the glue has slowly worn out and more and more of the small tile pieces have popped off.
All it took to remove the small pieces of tile was a screwdriver.
However, this left behind a dirty glue residue that easily came off with a razor blade tool and Goof-Off spray.
My original idea was to remove the glass top and spray paint the base with white and yellow spray paint from my craft stash. However, I was unable to remove the glass top. The screws required a special screwdriver, which I didn’t have.
The metal part around the screw holes holding in the glass was very rusty. Even if I could have removed the screws, I would not have been able to reuse the rusty metal pieces to put the glass tabletop back in. I decided it was best to forego that part of the project and find another way to spray paint the base with the glass still in place.
Even though this DIY side table was an easy project, like most DIY projects I find that I have to work through some unexpected issues.
My solution was to slide scrap paper underneath the frame and use lots of blue painter’s tape to protect the glass.
I had just enough yellow spray paint to paint the top rim of the little thrift store table, and just enough white paint to cover the powder-coated metal table base.
This ended up being the best way to use up some craft room supplies.
After the spray paint had dried I could turn my attention to a DIY project for the glass top.
The table was adorable with the new paint colors even without something decorative on the glass table top. But it just needed something more than just clear glass to me.
Once again I went back to my craft room.
My vision for the glass top of this little table was something floral and fun.
Adding some hand-painted whimsical designs in acrylic paints was my first choice for the glass tabletop. For the sack of time, I instead pulled out my Cricut Joy® and some rolls of white Smart Vinyl® that I always try to keep in my stash.
The thicker vinyl cutouts turned out to be the best choice after all.
As expected, I found just what I was looking for in Cricut Design Space® and was able to quickly cut out the same floral design 9 times to create a striped floral pattern across the top of this table.
White vinyl cutouts against the yellow accent color around the glass top turned out to be such a gorgeous side table.
Before this project, I used vinyl cutouts outside on this mailbox makeover project and so far I have been very impressed with how well it has lasted in our East TN weather. Since this table will be under the deck shelter, I have a feeling it will hold up very well for the next couple of years as well.
This DIY outdoor side table makeover is now a perfect addition to my new yellow and white color scheme on the back deck.
I really like this beautiful outdoor side table, and how it didn’t cost me anything but supplies I already had to give it new character and purpose. Combined with my original black rocking chairs with new cushions, also in yellow and white, it completes the entire outdoor furniture set.

I liked your first makeover, but this new one looks absolutely wonderful! I like the daisy design along with the yellow theme. I have yellow and white pillows in chairs on my front porch and your table would look so cute. I wonder what shipping from Tennessee to Maryland would be -LOL.
Well thank you so much Allyson. You are the second person to ask for the table but I am just not ready to give it up yet. But if I ever do I will let you know. LOL
This makeover looks really great. People always laugh that we spend lots of money to do DIY projects when it is cheaper to buy new ones. But they forget that we can keep using those said supplies over and over and are projects then cost nothing to do. Awesome project.
Thanks Anita
What a sweet little makeover – love how it turned out!
Thank you. Even my husband made a comment about how much he liked it. Without me pointing it out. LOL
Your table is super cute Donna! I love the daisy pattern, and the yellow is so happy and fresh. Great makeover!
Thank you! I have fallen for the yellow colors this summer.
Oh my gosh Donna, that is so cute! I love the flowers! I redid a similar table by using Mod Podge and fabric. I put the fabric on the underneath side of the glass face up so it shows through the glass top.

I saw your makeover on Pinterest when I was trying to figure out how to redo this table. Loved it! But since I couldn’t get the base off this table I had to come up with a different plan. Definitely pinned your idea though.
Oh wow, Donna! How pretty! You really created a beautiful table to go along with your lovely outdoor setting! I have a table just like the original look! You’ve forced me to do something with mine, now! Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks Gail. Good luck!
Vinyl to the rescue! Your table is beautiful and a perfect match for your rocking chair, Donna. Now I have to find that flower pattern on Design Space!
Thanks Ann. I just did a search on floral vines and it came up. I just kept scrolling until I saw the one that I knew fit my vision.
That is a super summery makeover! How fun and colorful.
Thanks Kim.
What a bright and cheery table! You have an eye for recycling for sure!
Thanks Patti. I do like how it came out.
