Lantern Floral Swag For Winter In Black and White

We celebrated Christmas with family this year on New Year’s Day.  Which of course meant my Christmas decorations were up much longer than usual. And as expected my winter decorating is still incomplete.

To kickstart a fresh new look for the winter, my first project was this simple, but elegant lantern floral swag in black and white.

Easy to make Lantern Swag

After the bright colors and shiny sparkle of Christmas decorations, my preferred look for winter is more subdued and monochromatic. For many years, black and white have been my favorite color combinations for the winter months. The stark contrast between the two extremes in color is a welcome change and a great precursor to the soft spring colors soon to follow.

I also don’t go all out in winter decorations either and usually stick to a new mantel display, a new winter-themed wreath at the door, and some subtle little accents scattered throughout.  Just enough to say “Welcome Winter” without the overabundance of the previous season.

 

 

And if you have read more than one of my blog posts over the years, you also know I love crafting out of my craft stash any time I can to use up an overabundance of supplies.

This project for a simple lantern swag uses items that somehow end up in my craft stash even though I didn’t go shopping for them, but it also uses more of a favorite ribbon I have featured in past winter decorating.

 

 

 

This Is A Very Easy DIY Project

If you have never made a lantern swag or just a lantern flower arrangement before, be prepared to see how easy it is to craft a beautiful accent for your indoor lanterns to be used as a table centerpiece or bookshelf decoration.

To start, you will need to gather a few faux greenery stems as the swag base.  For my project, I am using two greenery stems from a backyard wedding in the Fall.  Afterwards they were put in my craft room by my daughter.

I told you that I don’t always shop for these things, but I will use them if they are put in there.

 

 

 

 

I laid the two individual stems end to end and secured them together at the stems with floral wire.  This will create the swag base with room for a bow in the middle of the two stems.

Next, I added two faux lamb’s ear stems and several small white floral stems (I think from previous Christmas flowers). More floral wire wrapped around these stems creates the swag.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Just three simple steps to make your own lantern swag

Finally, I gather small loops of ribbon to make a bow, one of my favorite black and white ribbons featuring small ink drawings of houses, and finish the swag.  The same pipe cleaner I used to attach the bow to the floral stems is used to attach the swag to my black lantern.

 

 

 

This lantern also looks like a small house, so the ribbon choice is an excellent accent for this simple and beautiful lantern arrangement.   I finished the lantern display with a white candle and currently have it atop the white bookcase at the end of the hallway.

 

 

 

 

With toddlers and large dogs in my house, I am very hesitant to display it as a table centerpiece, as it was intended. Instead, I will enjoy seeing it each time I walk down the hallway.

 

 

 

 

 

I may prefer primarily black and white winter decorations, which is not for everyone.  Black and white works well in my modern home.

Still, the color scheme of your arrangement can be whatever colors and variety of foliage you want to use or have on hand.  Lantern swags are such a simple craft project with a big wow factor.

I didn’t know lantern swags were a trend until I was asked to make some for the Christmas store last year. But the possibilities are endless for events and weddings as table centerpieces or even in place of wreaths. And they take very little time or materials to make.
