I am an Interior Designer. Â I work, live, and breathe beautiful interiors, especially with plans for my own home. Recently I had to learn to compromise with my husband on what our home should look like.
After my husband finally finished Physician Assistant school five years ago, I could finally throw myself into the overhaul and updates of our home. Â I have pulled magazine and online inspirations into notebooks, drawn up new floorplans and layouts, and talked about it incessantly with my husband about the vision I WANTED for our interiors. My husband has mostly agreed with everything I have planned and visioned. Â He likes mid-century modern nearly as much as I do.
Until he threw me a curve ball while shopping for new furniture.

We both decided at the first of the year that we needed to purchase new furniture for the house.  It has been 12 years since we bought anything brand new and it is just time.  Our sofa has held up beautifully over the last twelve years considering we have had dogs, teenagers, and more dogs crashing on this sofa.  But the poor thing really needs to be replaced or reupholstered asap.  We made a plan to start the new furniture purchases with a new sofa.
You can imagine how my mind started working.  Since we are also completing the renovation of the front family room this year, I envisioned modern straight edged furniture in classic mid-century colors, a modern rug, and clean and uncluttered rooms.  I was going to create not one but two true mid-century styled rooms and love both of them dearly.

Then my husband finally spoke up on his vision for a few things, the living room in particular. Â To him, the living room is his place to crash and rejuvenate and relax. Â My vision for the living room just didn’t agree with what he wanted. Â He is a tall man and he finally wanted a sofa he could comfortably take a nap on, and a recliner (I think they are ugly) that he could enjoy, and something we didn’t have to worry about the dogs destroying.

My mind was blown! Â My vision is what goes with our style house, we both like mid-century modern and uncluttered spaces, and he was just messing up my plans. Â My plans!
You know what, he is right!
My husband works long and hard hours as a PA in Neurosurgery. Â He spends his days dealing with brain cancer, spinal surgeries, and trauma. Â On the nights he is on call and may work a 40 hour shift, he deals with car wreck victims, accident victims, and may have the unpleasant tasks of telling families bad news. Â He often holds the family member’s hands as he guides them through the process of saying goodbye and making decisions about organ donation.
He has the type of job that I would never ever consider. Â So if he wants a large reclining sofa where he can mindlessly play video games to decompress after a hard shift, then he will have that sofa. Â The kids often laugh at him because his characters on the video screen sometimes wander in circles because he is so mentally tired.
This is how our living room has looked for a couple of years now. Â Not my favorite look but I was waiting until we put in the new floors and finished the front room to update this whole room.
So, we ended up with this:
I will go ahead and say right now what you are thinking – – – THAT is a lot of brown! Â These two toned brown sofas and the recliner are so comfortable, I won’t deny that, but they overwhelm me a bit with all this brown in one room.
Yes, I compromised on what will become a brand new look for our living room. Â Not anything close to what I had envisioned, but I can agree those sofas sure are comfortable and I will probably be the first one to take a nap on them. Â My front family room style plans will remain the same, Â mid-century modern inspired and this room will have a more relaxed masculine feel. Â We both win in this case.

I also get two new challenges to test my design skills. Â I get to discover how to accessorize and recreate our living room into more of the casual and masculine family room, while working on my vision for the front room into the classic mid-century style – all on a budget.

I already know my color scheme will be a mixture of brown, blue, and orange in either one of these two color schemes (as if you couldn’t tell that from all these inspiration pictures included in this post).

Or a combination of both for winter and summer.
It is going to be fun. Â I will post new photos of the living room in a few weeks and the new front family room by early summer.

Now we just need to compromise on which room will get the bigger TV. Â Be sure to come back to see how we continue to compromise on the design style of our home.
“Charm is deceptive and beauty if fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord will be praised.” Â Proverbs 31:30
Oh lordie. I laughed when I saw you couch because ours is the same except it the ugliest blue. He loves the monstrous mountains of ugliness. When we move I got the pretty furniture on the main floor and put the blue creatures upstairs with the television.
I always remind myself he lives here too, and I got the couch to prove it lol
Too funny. I do like how comfortable they are and I am working on adding new stuff so we are both happy. Thanks for visiting.
Marriage is all about compromise! I’m going through it right now with my husband as well. Our family room carpet needs replaced. I am wanting to carry wood throughout. He wasn’t gung ho on the idea, but finally agreed. I also wanted to carry the wood into our bedroom and on our stairs. He is not wanting that much wood. He feels it’s too cold. Which is funny because he’s never cold, but I am. lol! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann
Thanks Jann
Donna, I know just how you feel!! When we built our room addition I had a vision of what it would look like, but my hubby wanted a big comfy recliner. So now we have matching big comfy recliners, lol!! Compromise makes a happy home 🙂
Hey Susanne. Compromise does work best. And I am so enjoying the new furniture so I’m not going to complain.
HA! I love the dogs sprawled across the couch!!! They are sacked out and super cute. And, you’re right, your hubby does deserve a comfy place to decompress from a hard day. I think you compromised nicely. Can’t wait to see how the rest goes… Thanks for co-hosting and sharing at the #HomeMattersParty 🙂

Life With Lorelai
Thanks Lorelai. Those fur babies take over most of the house some days. I have noticed though that the microfiber fabric on the new furniture is not showing the dog fur so it is a win win for me.
Men definitely like to have a big comfy sofa and a recliner. I am sure you will find a compromise you both like.
Thanks Debra. I’m working on it.
Thanks Nicole. I have been shopping online for area rugs and some pillows. I have already started changing out the art in the room but I think we are considering painting the walls this week – maybe. This project definitely has a tight budget.
Your couches look comfy and nice! I think you’ll be able to change up the look a lot with colorful throw pillows and accessories. Excited to see your updated room in a few weeks! good luck! Stopping by from the #HomeMattersParty
You’re not alone! I’m definitely not an interior designer, but I do have grand visions for when my husband finishes up with school in a few months. He doesn’t care much about our furniture and home decor, except when it comes to the family room couch…it’s got to recline and be big, brown, puffy and leather. Not my favorite style at all (even though it is the most comfortable). I’ve spent quite a few hours looking up home decor with brown leather couches, trying to find a way to “decorate around” it. But I still have the same outlook that you do…he works so hard and needs a comfy place to relax after work…he can have the couch he wants:)
Hey Sara. I think I have looked at hours and hours of inspiration photos and still can’t decide how I want this room to look. The struggle is real and my budget is small this time around. Hopefully I can reveal a newly updated room in a few weeks if I can even decide on how I want it to look.
