Modern Christmas Tree themed Lazy Susan

I love finding things in the home improvement stores that you can use for projects other than construction and renovation. For example, a couple of years ago, I saw a painted lazy susan project in Home Depot and was inspired to create my own modern version for my kitchen table for Christmas. So, I can’t take full credit for this project, but I gave it my flair and sense of style.

The project at our local Home Depot had a painted snowman scene on their Lazy Susan, but I decided to go with a stained background and a more modern theme for mine.

For this project, you will need:

• A pre-cut round pine circle 
• Lazy Susan hardware kit complete with screws and plastic bumpers for the bottom
• Wood stain in your choice of color.  I used Minwax in Early American
• Acrylic craft paints in your choice of colors.
• Craft brushes in various sizes
• Minwax water-based Polycrylic Protective Finish in semi-gloss
• Drill to install the Lazy Susan hardware kit
• Imagination and templates to design your own Christmas theme

First, you need to consider sanding down any rough areas on the wood cutout. Mostly, the circle was cut well and already sanded down.

I have never made a Lazy Susan before, but there is a first time for everything.

Apply two layers of the stain in your choice of color.  I used Minwax Early American stain and allowed it to dry overnight.  I also applied one layer of stain to the back side of the Lazy Susan for a consistent stain look.

To create the template for the tree design, I drew several sizes of modern-shaped cone trees on white copy paper and cut them out.  I then placed them on the Lazy Susan and moved them around until I decided how I wanted it all to look and come together.  You can use a similar technique for whatever design you want for your project.

I traced the templates with a pencil and painted my design with metallic gold, green, and white craft paints. This step took a couple of days to complete as I worked on the design, allowed the layers of paint to dry between coats, and added details as I went along. The design was free-form and evolving the whole time I worked on the project, so there were some imperfections and mistakes to embrace. I could deal with those since I wasn’t making this a gift.

The paint must dry for 24 hours before applying the Minwax Polycrylic finish.
