I love finding something in the home improvement stores that you can use for other types of projects besides construction and renovation. For example, a couple of years ago I saw a painted Lazy Susan project in Home Depot and was inspired to create my own modern version for my kitchen table for Christmas. So, I can’t take full credit for this project, but I did give it my own flare and sense of style.
The project at our local Home Depot had a painted snowman scene on their Lazy Susan, but for mine, I decided to go with a stained background and a more modern theme.

Lazy Susan painted with a Modern Christmas Tree Scene
For this project you will need:
- A pre-cut round pine circle
- Lazy Susan hardware kit complete with screws and plastic bumpers for the bottom
- Wood stain in your choice of color. I used Minwax in Early American
- Acrylic craft paints in your choice of colors.
- Craft brushes in various sizes
- Minwax water based Polycrylic Protective Finish in semi-gloss
- Drill to install the Lazy Susan hardware kit
- Imagination and templates to design your own Christmas theme
The first thing you need to consider is sanding down any rough areas on the wood cutout. For the most part the circle was cut really well and already sanded down.
I have never made a Lazy Susan before but there is a first time for everything.
Apply two layers of the stain in your choice of color. I used Minwax Early American stain and allowed it to dry overnight. I also applied one layer of stain to the back side of the Lazy Susan for an overall consistent stain look.
To create the template for the tree design, I drew several sizes of modern shaped cone trees on white copy paper and cut them out. I then placed them on the Lazy Susan and moved them around until I decided how I wanted it all to look and come together. You can use a similar technique for whatever design you want for your project.
I traced the templates with a pencil and painted in my design with metallic gold, green, and white craft paints. This step took a couple of days to complete as I worked on the design and allowed the layers of paint to dry between coats or added details as I went along. The design was free form and evolving the whole time as I worked on the project so there were some imperfections and mistakes to embrace along the way. Since I wasn’t making this as a gift I could deal with those.
I let all of the paints dry for 24 hours before applying the Minwax Polycrylic finish.
My husband installed the lazy susan hardware kit for me. The hardware kit comes with easy to follow instructions.
