This is one of those projects we have discussed, planned, changed our minds, discussed it again until we want to mentally scream, and wondered so many times how we would ever afford it anyway. But at the end of last year, we finally had a new privacy fence professionally installed around our back yard.

If you don’t know this about us already, we have four dogs. Four very spoiled and active dogs. I used to spend a lot of my days walking dogs up and down our steep driveway to give them some exercise.
My husband and I have wanted to build a fence around our back yard since we bought our home in 2007.
We just couldn’t seem to decide on where to put it, how big we wanted it, or most importantly, how to afford it.
Instead, we built a small fence off the back screen porch that once was a pit dug for an above ground pool. A project left behind by the previous owners.
That fence wasn’t fancy, or what we really wanted, but it did give our dogs a place to play or sunbathe outside. Part of the fence was connected to the raised deck section that for a few years we converted to araised garden bed.
Time and the elements have completely rotted the deck and fence out. Last year when we finally had our new sunroom built, we knew the removal of the old deck and fence was next on the list for our back yard space.
I am so excited to share that we finally did it.
We had a privacy fence professionally installed back in December and here is what it currently looks like.
No, my backyard is not pretty.
It is still a mess of tree stumps. branches and leaves from last fall. The old fence and deck are in desperate need of replacing. We had to have nearly 15 trees cleared out over the last couple of years to be able to put in this fence so there will be a season of cleaning up this year.
This summer, the old fence and our entire side deck and two sets of steps, including the ramp, will be removed and rebuilt. The deck will have a new shape and size and will be both dog friendly and grandchild ready.
I also have a funny story to share about our new fenced in backyard.
Our neighbors also decided to build a privacy fence at the same time because the trees lining their property had slowly died or fallen over in storms one by one. I am telling you this to share the hilarious shot from our back door that shows 5 layers of fencing between us!
Some of the fences on our side will be removed this summer but it is just a funny shot of what happens when neighbors both decide to build privacy fences at the same time and don’t realize it.
And if you are wondering, yes we do get along with our neighbors and have known them for more than 20 years.
It is just a funny photo to me so I had to share it.
My other plans for our new fenced in back yard include some landscaping that includes decorative bushes and flowers. That may not happen this year because the new deck needs to take the biggest priority and time commitment. After that we will rent a backhoe and level out the area before I will feel confident to plant new landscaping.
Step by step it will get there.
Hugs,
