We have been dealing with a layer of ceiling dust throughout the house for the past month. For week 4 of of the One Room Challenge, I am finally working on picking the right shade of gray paint with the new light fixture for the walls of our laundry room makeover. #oneroomchallenge #bhgorc
In the last week the new ceiling for our laundry room makeover has been completely sanded, painted, and finally the new light fixture has been installed.
My husband set the LED light to the daylight setting to have a clear bright light for the room. Since the room is long and only has one window that is shaded by a large tree outside in the front yard of the house, daylight was the best setting.
But getting the right shade of gray for the walls of this room has been a challenge!
Last week I went to Home Depot and purchased sample containers for two new light shades of gray, Natural Gray and Silver Bullet. We already had two darker samples from a previous project but nixed those options without even putting them up on the walls.
After getting a layer of primer on the walls this week and after installing the new light fixture, I tried out small areas of both colors of gray on the walls.
I quickly decided one was too blueish and the other looks muddy.
Gray can be a difficult color to chose for a wall color.
However, you never decide on a cloudy day so we waited a few more days to see how the color changed during different times of the day and with sunlight through the window.
A couple of days later, our opinions haven’t changed.
Gray can be a difficult color to pick. It is never just a mixture of black and white color tones. Some gray paints have green and brown undertones, or blue, or even purple. For this room I wanted a more silvery white gray so I still needed to find one where it was a more balanced mixture of black and white.
To help me have a clearer picture of how this room is going to look, I also hung the wall decals alongside the paint samples. I was able to rule out using the gray colored decals on the accent wall. I will only be using the black decals in this room and saving the gray ones for the basement bathroom in another project.
Since neither one of these colors is the look we want for the room, we will be going back to the store for a different color sample.
For next week’s post the walls will be completely painted so we will reveal which gray color was the final choice and move forward on completely this room for the final reveal.
I am not currently painting, but I have been thinking of how I want to change up my living room, and was thinking a light gray for the walls would be nice to make it brighter, but now I am thinking I may need to pick a different color, hehe. Fun update – thanks!
It has definitely been more of a challenge than I was expecting to pick the right shade of gray that we liked. Thanks for visiting.
I tend to go for deep colors and dramatic looks so I like a nice dark gray but could see how that would make a small room feel even smaller. Can’t wait to see what you’ve picked!
Thanks Joanne. We are in the final week of the challenge so next weekend I will be posting the full room with all the details.
