I think garlands are fun and festive, not matter what holiday or occasion you make them for. Plus, they are very easy to make. Since I was planning a Patriotic Summer Mantel this year, I decided it was a great time to try to make my own red, white, and blue pom pom garland for fun.

I have discovered through reading so many other blogs that one of the best suggestions for finding great sources for pom pom balls is through Etsy sellers. And I totally agree with them that the selections and colors choices are awesome.
I customized my order and purchased my red, white, and blue pom pom felt balls through a great shop called Cutest Little Garlands on Etsy.
Not only did they arrive to my mailbox in just a few short days, but the size and quality of the product was just what I was looking for.
The size of felt pom pom balls I used were 1 inch wide and I was able to customize the color selections.
To start my festive colored garland, I needed to first decide on the placement of the colors. I could use all red pom poms together, then the white ones, and then the blue on the garland strand. Or I could do it by two’s and three’s. I finally decided that since my mantel is so dark, the laying out the pom poms in a sequence of one each of red, white, and then blue, would stand out the most against the dark wood of the mantel.
My mantel is 8 feet long, so I needed to start with a very long strand of jute twine length. I planned a 3 inch spacing between each felt ball, so decided that 12 feet was a good place to start with the cut length. This gave me the length plus extra to make all of the tiny knots in the twine.
You will also need a long sharp, thick, needle to push through the pom poms.
To start, I tied a small knot in the end of the just twine. I then inserted the needled, basically forced the needle, through the center of the first red pom pom and slide it down the full length of the cut jute twine to stop at the first knot. Then, I tied another small knot beside that first red pom pom to hold it in place.
This is a great project to make while watching a movie or relaxing outside while listening to a podcast or audio book on your phone.
To place the next pom pom, I measured out 3 inches, tied a knot, and then slid a white pom pom on the jute twine all the way to that knot. Then finished it off with a another small knot to hold it in place. Measured off another 3 inches, tied a knot, and repeated the process with a blue pom pom. This is the pattern I continued all the way down the length of the jute twine to make the full garland length.
This process got a little easier as the length of twine got shorter.
In less than an hour, I was able to make the entire garland and a great addition to my Patriotic Summer Mantel.

so cute and lovely idea! looks great!
Looks really great! Not sure if I have the patience for a project like this, but I do love the idea of working with felt balls – going to go check out that shop.
I love the simplicity of this garland. I wish I’d take the time to learn how to make felt balls, but I know there’s no way I could crank out enough uniform ones for garland–I’ll leave it to the experts!
I know. I would love to know how to make them too but taking the time to actually do that would be the biggest challenge. At least Etsy has some great shops that I don’t have to worry about that. Thanks for visiting.
Donna,
So cute!! Love this idea!! Thanks so much for stopping by!!
