I have been blessed with a good sized laundry room in our house. It is spacious but a total disaster! For my second time of participating in the the One Room Challenge ™ I have decided to tackle a simple and modern laundry room makeover. #oneroomchallenge #bhgorc
Simple and Modern Laundry Room Makeover – One Room Challenge Week 1
When we first bought this house over 12 years ago, the laundry room was one of the first rooms we worked on. Since the original vinyl flooring was torn in places, it was important to get a new floor in place before moving in our washer and dryer. I have always loved black and white checkerboard flooring – still do – so we installed durable vinyl tiles after repairing and leveling the floor.
I plan to keep this flooring during this makeover.
Back then, I also wanted this room to be bright and cheery and fun so I painted it in this orange-apricot color. Not really my favorite any longer.
Not too long ago, my husband wanted to install a brighter light fixture so I decided to paint the popcorn ceiling before installing it. As you can see that created a different problem and mess.
The ceiling drywall boards had not been primed or painted before the popcorn texture was applied and it started to peel right off the ceiling when I try to apply the wet paint. Just another mess to fix now.
Another problem we have encountered over the years with this room is that the utility sink was cracked so we couldn’t use it. For a while now we have just had pipes sticking out of the wall waiting for us to fix that too.
I have to admit as well, that this room has become a dumping ground/storage solution for other renovation projects in the house. Paint cans have piled up next to the dryer because we needed to use them frequently and storing them in the basement just seemed too big of a hassle of course. Laziness is not a word I will mention here.
The condition of our laundry room has frustrated me for some time.
Life gets busy! We had two kids in college, two working parents, one wedding, a rental house to renovate, two kids move out, and now another wedding to plan. Our messy and chaotic laundry room was not a priority.
Until now! It is time to clean up the clutter, repaint the walls and bring some order to this chaos.
Our plan for The One Room Challenge™ :
First we will clean out the clutter and move everything out of the room except the washer and dryer.
The popcorn ceiling will be removed and the ceiling repaired and painted.
A new and brighter light fixture will be installed.
The walls will receive a nice new calming shade of grey paint to compliment the black and white flooring.
A new utility sink and cabinet will be installed.
New storage solutions will be put in place to better manage the needs in the room.
New furniture will be moved in to serve as a better folding table and laundry sorter.
There will be a new fun and modern wall treatment installed for an accent wall.
New accessories and art will be chosen and installed.
Now that it is just my husband and I living in this house, I plan to update this space to something that is clutter free and functional but also playful and fun and a nice room to spend time in. Along the way I hope I share some helpful tips and ideas you can use in your own cluttered laundry room.
Follow along with me for the next six weeks to see how I transform this space!
I can relate! I am looking forward to seeing what you turn this room into. I need some inspiration for my tiny laundry room.
Thanks! I hope I can give you some inspiration even with some small changes.
