Tiny Harry Potter Book Charm Christmas Ornaments
I am fully embracing the Christmas in July enthusiasm this year.
Why? Because not only do I work part-time in a Christmas store, but I have big plans to decorate a couple of themed Christmas trees this year. One for the Fantasy of Trees fundraiser event for the local children’s hospital, and at least two for my own home.
And to finish all the crafty projects on my list for each tree, I need to get started now!
For many years, I have been collecting Harry Potter themed ornaments for a tree dedicated to the books and the movies. Since this year is the 25th Anniversary of the first movie, it is the perfect time to finally put up that tree!
So, in this post for this month’s Creative Craft Hop, I created tiny Harry Potter book ornaments with decorative charms.

A funny little story before we get to the craft part…
I actually planned these miniature book ornaments more than a year ago.
One day, while I was ordering something on Amazon, I spied a listing for seven miniature-sized Harry Potter books at a great price. I didn’t hesitate to add them to my cart and hit the order button.
I was going to make seven easy-to-make ornaments for my tree with them the minute they arrived.
Do you remember my advice from another project, where I told you to always check the measurements and sizes before you buy anything? I didn’t follow my own advice.
I almost couldn’t find them in the package when it arrived. I honestly thought they had been left out of the bigger package. But, nope, they were indeed there.
All seven miniature books were securely sealed in a small plastic baggie. Each one measures only 1″ h x 3/4″ w in size! All seven fit nicely in the palm of my hand!

They are so tiny!
And there went my idea for making seven simple ornaments.
I am blessed with a creative friend with ideas better than mine when I get stuck.
I lost count of how many times I searched Pinterest for ideas for using these tiny books as ornaments.
But sometimes you just need a friend to state the obvious solution.
Her suggestion to purchase large, decorative ornament hooks to hang the books from, along with beads and charms, was brilliant!

As it turned out, the only thing I had to purchase was these large, loopy gold ornament hangers to make these ornaments (easy to purchase at the Christmas store I work at, of course). Everything else I had in abundance from my mom’s jewelry-making supplies.
I am very fortunate to have a ready supply of jewelry-making beads and tools available from my mom’s old craft stash. A stash I obtained when my sisters and I cleaned out her home four years ago. I don’t make jewelry but I have definitely have explored several ways to use up her bead stash (that never seems to be any smaller). I have made beaded pens, a windchime, and other Harry Potter Christmas ornaments.
To make your own version of these ornaments, you will need the following supplies:
- Miniature Books from Amazon
- Mod Podge for Paper
- Jewelry Pliers
- Assorted small beads in different colors
- 2-inch eye pins
- 2-inch head pins
- Assorted jewelry dangles of your choice
- Small jump rings
- Large decorative ornament hooks
Mom’s jewelry-making beads and supplies to the rescue – again!
To make the miniature books into charms, I started by inserting a two-inch eye pin through the “spine” of each book. The inside of each book is a stack of small blank pages that easily flip open. I decided it would be best to glue them all closed with Mod Podge made for paper.

Once the Mod Podge had dried, I slid a jump ring on the top of the eye pin, then used small jewelry pliers to twist and loop the eye pin wire around the jump ring. This jump ring will be used to slide the miniature book’s ring onto the ornament hanger like a charm.
At the bottom of each miniature book, the eye on the pin allowed me to playfully add small jewelry dangles with rhinestones, an owl, a key, and even a mermaid. I matched the color and character of the jewelry dangles to the book’s theme.

Once the book charms were done, I gathered an assortment of beads in the Harry Potter House colors of red, green, blue, and yellow, along with decorative beads in gold, black, and silver.

Stringing the assortment of beads onto two-inch head pins, I quickly assembled fourteen more strands of jewelry charms with jump rings at the top.
Hanging from the large gold decorative ornament hanger, each book is now part of a collection of color-coordinated beaded charms that make up each ornament.

Even though I am preparing early for Christmas decorations, I don’t have an actual tree up yet to started decorating. But I do keep a small 12-inch Dollar Tree Christmas tree in my craft room that comes in handy to photograph these Summer Christmas crafts.

Don’t Forget To Pin This!

Nooooooo, how can it be 25 years!! That’s wrong. I love how your ornaments turned out, Donna. My son is a BIG Harry Potter fan and they’ve just moved into a new apartment. These would make stunning Christmas pressies for them.
Thanks Michelle. I have several more ornaments planned for the next few months.
What a cute idea for Harry Potter fans!
How smart of you to take a problem and turn it into something positive. Iโm not a Harry Potter person, but I love the miniature and bead idea. Itโs perfect for small trees. And a good reminder to check measurements!
Thanks Carol.
Oh my, Donna! Your Harry Potter book charm ornaments look adorable and amazing! You certainly have a knack for coming up with the best ideas! How incredibly special and nostalgic are these!!!!
Thank you!
Your friend had such a great idea, but the way you executed these with your mom’s bead is so special. These are absolutely adorable Donna! I can’t believe it’s been 25 years since the movie; time flies!
Thanks Sara. I bounce a lot of ideas off my friend, and vice versa. We have different styles but make it work.
Donna, these are so cute! What a fun Christmas in July craft for Harry Potter fans! Blessings, Cecilia – My Thrift Store Addiction
