A Trio of Patriotic Houses

On a visit to Michaels craft store I found these small house shaped shelves by Artminds™ on a clearance rack.  Not one to ever pass by a clearance rack without browsing first, I was delighted to find three shelves in the same shape for just a few dollars a piece.  I actually purchased more than these three house shaped shelves but those are for another blog post.  I knew these adorable little shelves would make a great trio of patriotic houses for a display.

Home decor does not have to have a flag painted on it to be considered patriotic.

If you enjoy the new Hearth and Hand™ by Magnolia Home at Target, you probably also have seen their Wood Nesting House set.

I have considered purchasing this set of nesting houses because who wouldn’t love a set of adorable miniature houses?!  Right!  But for some reason I have hesitated each time because I couldn’t decide on which color to buy and where to put them in my home.  So I waited.

And I am glad I did.

With this set of miniature house shaped shelves I now have a custom set of my own that I can either display on a table or hang on the wall.  Double duty and a double win for decor for my home.

With red, white, and blue paints, it is easy to create custom one of a kind patriotic decor using just about any type of home decor product.

I first painted the inside of each shelf in either red, white or navy in acrylic craft paints.  This took several coats over several days to fully dry.

Then I applied a coat of MinWax Stain in Early American to the outside of each shelf followed by two coats of MinWax Polycrylic in Semi-gloss.

So far I haven’t decided on the exact location in my home for the shelves so I have been moving them around a few times.  I’m sure they will find a permanent home eventually in the living room with our other patriotic and military decor.

“Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
