How to Make Your Home A Perfectly Functional Space

updated family room

Working from home several days a week, I find that I struggle with actually relaxing at home, especially as a DIY blogger who has projects in various stages that need attention. The secret is to give each space a function and purpose.

Occasionally, my posts include affiliate links and collaborative content, which helps to support this blog if you visit the links or order anything through the links, at no additional cost to you.

Your home is supposed to be a place of tranquility and calm.

It is supposed to be where you can relax after a long day, where you can forget about everything that has happened outside those four walls. However, household stress is a very legitimate thing. While you might have loved your home initially, you now find problems everywhere, which is enough to make you wish you were anywhere else.

The answer is to make your home more functional, but how can you do this? Here are four tips to get you started.

Revolutionize Your Space

This year, we took our dated screen porch to a fully functional and relaxing all-weather sunroom.

If you’re in the mood for a rewarding DIY project, learning the steps to revolutionize your space is a fantastic place to begin.

Most people consider rearranging the layout, but you can do much more with this. The secret is to make the most of what you have without making your home look overpacked or even underdecorated. This could start with a barn door hidden TV cabinet that draws attention away from a common household item and instead focuses on the unique decor.

You can also consider multifunctional furniture with storage capabilities, which will reduce the amount you need in a single room.

Keep Out The Pests

One thing that can make your home feel dirty and gross is the presence of pests, especially during the summer. Although winter also brings them inside, it can feel like you’re sharing a home with a bunch of squatters.

Keeping the pests out through screens, professional help, and mosquito control will help you maintain a clean and hygienic home. This gives you one fewer issue to worry about when you’re trying to keep your house, and it ensures you can plug any gaps around windows or the roof to prevent recurring issues.

Do Not Ignore the Chance to Declutter

This statement makes me smile!

As time goes by, you accumulate more and more items. Even if you moved into your home wondering how you’d ever fill the space, these items might overflow, and you are running out of places to keep them.

I have 16 closet spaces in my home, and when we bought the house, I never imagined filling them up.  Now, 14 years later, I need to purge about half of them.

Decluttering is suitable for the home, but also the mind. You need to be ruthless, of course. You and your family won’t want to get rid of some items, but if you can’t even remember where you got it from, it’s time to say goodbye.

Know Where Everything Is

After decluttering, you can easily find a space for everything to ensure you know where everything is. If you’re someone who puts things in place for the time being, it’s time to stop this immediately. You can find quality storage solutions almost anywhere, while labels and reorganization can also help your home feel more functional.

You can find whatever you need, and you don’t need to think about where it could be, either.

Fully Functional

A functional home is a happy home. You have made the most of your space, and you no longer trip over toys, books, and coats while walking through with a hot cup of coffee.

I no longer have kids in my home, but with four dogs, their fur and chew toys are a constant source of stress for me.

This is only the beginning, though. You (and everyone else) need to maintain this functionality to help your home reach the next level. It is never a once-and-done project.

But you will win the battle for your home if you constantly try to maintain and work on your existing spaces, especially those you want to relax in.
