Round Wood Sign

Welcome to another month of the Craft Room DeStash Challenge.ย  This month I decided to finally make a custom hand painted round wood sign from a precut round piece of wood from Home Depot.

Every month a group of bloggers are challenged by C’mon Get Crafty to create a new craft or project from their own stash of goodies! Everyone is allowed a $10 allowance for necessities to complete their project (i.e. paint brushes, glue, etc), but the bulk of it must be created from their own stash of goodies.

Round Wood Sign Project

I purchased this round wood slice probably 3 or 4 years ago when I purchased another one just like it for a Lazy Susan Project.ย  ย My idea at the time was to also purchase some hairpin legs and make a custom side table for my family room using this second round wood piece.ย  Needless to say that didn’t happen and this round wood piece sat in the top of a closet for years.

This is definitely a must needed de-stash kind of project.

The first step to this project was to clean up the wood slice and use a wood conditioner to get it ready for stain.ย  Using a stain color I already had in my craft room stash, Early American by MinWax, I applied two coats of stain to the entire round piece, front and back.ย  Staining both sides just makes it seen more cohesive all around.ย  Not necessary but I like the look.

Next, I picked out a stencil from my supply stash and traced the design of the stencil on to the round wood piece.ย ย

ย

After that, I applied several layers of white acrylic paint to fill in the stencil.ย  This project would have gone much better with oil based paints and sponges but since I had neither in my craft stash and they cost more than the $10 monthly budget, I went with what I had.

The only thing I did purchase for this project was a roll of burlap and lace ribbon from Walmart for only $3.44.ย  ย It was not on my original plans for this round wood sign, but once I saw the ribbon I liked it immediately for this project.

I attached a saw tooth hanger on the back of the round wood sign, also from my craft stash of supplies.

These precut round wood pieces can be purchased at Home Depot and Lowes.

I searched several different techniques and styles of fabric flowers on Pinterest, but finally just ended up making small rosette type flowers for the front of the sign.

These were easy to make by cutting the burlap ribbon in long sections and twisting and turning the fabric around itself to resemble a rose.ย  ย Because the burlap and lace were so stiff of a fabric to work with, my rosettes didn’t exactly match the tutorials on Pinterest, but I like the rustic nature of them enough to use them anyway.

The bow was made by just cutting a short strip of the ribbon and pinching it together in the center, secured by a bread tie to keep the shape.

Hot glue not only holds the rosettes together but also secured the bow and the rosettes to the front of the round wood sign.

My daughter has already claimed this round wood sign for her wedding next year, but for I have placed the sign beside my bed in our master bedroom.
