I grew up in eastern North Carolina in the heart of the Carolina Baseball League. For anyone who has ever watched the 1988 movie Bull Durham – you know exactly what I’m talking about. Summer meant spending our evenings driving to Kinston and watching the Kinston Indians play, eating hot dogs, and watching the crowd. For my dad, it was all about the game, for me and my mom, it was watching the crowd and discussing outfits and hairstyles. Being a southern woman, that is what you did. In honor of my dad’s love of the game, I was inspired to create a baseball diamond shaped wreath for both my mom and a good friend this Spring.

This is an easy tutorial to take a square wreath form and create a baseball diamond shaped wreath for the baseball fan in your life.
My father’s love of baseball inspired me to make a new wreath for my mom, and a second one for a close friend of mine whose son plays the game. I have collected all kinds of wreath inspiration on Pinterest, and decided to give a baseball themed wreath a try, with a twist of my own of course.
Baseball Diamond Shaped Wreath
For this project you will need:
- Square wreath wire form
- Green Burlap Ribbon
- Natural Burlap Ribbon
- Blue Ticking Stripped Ribbon
- 3 Baseballs
- Hot Glue Glue and Glue Sticks
- Pipe Cleaners
- Floral Wire
- Cardboard Banner Kit
- Acrylic Paints
- Word Processing Software (Word), printer and paper
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Colored Chalk
- X-Acto Knife
I am not going to go into depth about how to make a burlap wreath, there are more than enough tutorials on that subject on Pinterest, so I am going to save you the trouble of reading it again. For my project, I chose a square wreath form so I could turn it on the side and actually hang it from the corner to mimic a baseball diamond. You will use the floral wire and pipe cleaners to attach the burlap to the wire form and also to attach the bow to the wreath.

The colors I used for the burlap, olive green and natural, were wrapped around the wreath to also mimic the grass of a baseball field and the baselines for running the bases. I had originally planned to attach the baseballs at the top and two side corners but the weight of the baseballs was a concern with hanging the wreath. Instead I added a ribbon to the top and attached the baseballs to the wire form at the bottom and corners to balance the weight of the wreath for better hanging. I also make sure to glue directly to the wire form and not the burlap ribbon to secure the baseballs.
To create the sign for my friend’s wreath, I measured the cardboard pendent around three inches up from the bottom point, and cut off the excess cardboard so it resembled a baseball diamond home plate. I then painted the cardboard piece with white acrylic paint.
Making a sign for the wreath is optional and can be made in any way you like, or any quote or saying. The wreath is nice even without a home plate shaped sign or saying.
I used heavy cardboard stock to make my sign, but a small canvas frame could work just as well.
The funny saying was easy to create and paint on the home plate. I first created the saying in MS Word and printed it out. Then you cover the back of the piece of paper in colored chalk, lay it on top of the home plate cardboard piece, and trace over the letters. This should leave an impression of the letters on the painted cardboard that is then very easy to fill in with acrylic paints.
In the future, I will be using a Cricut machine to make this part of the project so much faster, neater, and definitely much easier.
Make a Baseball Diamond Shaped Wreath for your favorite player or sports fan.
This version of the baseball wreath was a Mother’s Day gift to my friend and as a delayed house warming present. Her son is a high school baseball player so every weekend is spent at the ball field and not at home. The funny saying is perfect for them during the Spring months.
My mom’s wreath will be slightly different from this one and I will post those images in another upcoming post.
