Best Design Options For Homes With Pets

In our home, we are a dog-loving family.

As owners of multiple dogs, all three of our furry best friends give us so much love, but are also slowly damaging our home.

Have you fought the battle between having a lovely home and enjoying your pets?

best home design materials

Creating a home environment that accommodates kids and pets while maintaining style and functionality requires careful consideration of design materials.

From flooring to furniture, walls to window treatments, each aspect of home design plays a role in ensuring a safe and comfortable living space for the entire family.

Pet owners have some excellent options in design materials to suit their homes, design style, and maintain harmony with their furry best friend.

First, let’s talk about flooring and fabrics.

Flooring options tailored for households with children and pets include solution-dyed fiber carpeting, known for its high stain resistance, making it an excellent choice for handling spills and accidents.

With its waterproof and durable properties, laminate flooring is a practical solution for homes with active lifestyles, providing resilience against scratches and spills. Stone plastic composite (SPC), available atย flooring stores, offers durability and waterproofing, making it ideal for areas prone to moisture and high foot traffic.

Laminate flooring, also known as luxury vinyl flooring, is an excellent pet-friendly option.

Not only can you install beautiful floors in your home, but you also get the added benefit of durable, scratch-resistant flooring that withstands the sharp nails and the weight of larger dogs.ย

In a previous post, I shared why we chose laminate flooring over hardwood in our home. Our former home had a different type of hardwood installed. After just one week, I could see every indentation of our dog’s nails on those floors.ย ย

As much as I love the style and look of beautiful hardwood floors, I love the durability of my laminate flooring even more.ย  When deciding onย the type of flooring to install in your home, it is essential to consider your lifestyle and how you will be living in it.ย  More importantly, how much do you want to worry about the damage a flooring design choice might cause compared to the time you spend enjoying your home with your kids and pets?ย

When it comes to furniture and fabrics, performance fabrics are a popular choice for their scratch- and stain-resistant properties, ensuring longevity in the face of everyday wear and tear. Faux leather provides the luxurious look of genuine leather while offering easy maintenance and durability against spills. Upholstered designs add comfort to living spaces and provide a protective barrier against sharp corners and edges for children.

Several years ago, we desperately needed new living room furniture. This was mainly because the designer furniture I had previously purchased for its mid-century styleย influencedย my purchase decision, rather than being more practical in my fabric selection.ย

Within a few short years, that sofa was beyond repair, and the dogs had chewed up the arms off the matching chair. It was sad.

Shopping for replacements included choosing a durable fabric that would withstand the wear and tear of dogs.ย  So we bought very functional sofas with microfiber fabric that would be worn like armor against pet destruction.ย

Not to mention how much easier it is to remove the pet hair from this type of fabric.ย

Years later, when three small grandkids spill their drinks, drool on everything in sight, and use these sofas like mountains to climb, I don’t fret or worry about them damaging the fabric of the furniture.

They may not be as stylish and pretty as I would like, but I also don’t want my grandkids to have only memories of their Nonna being more worried about the furniture than spending time with them.ย

And I won’t go back to the days of plastic-covered furniture.ย  Remember those from your childhood?ย  I may have a few dining chairs from my husband’s grandmother that are still covered in plastic in our basement.ย ย Just saying.

My next furniture purchase for this room will also include durable fabric, but definitely with a little more color. Currently, I feel like I’m trapped in a sea of brown.

Similarly, when we replaced the carpet in our family room, we purposely purchased a stain-resistant, pet-friendly carpet from Home Depot that resists liquids, urine, and other pet- or kid-related accidents.ย

Easy cleanup for spills before they become stains is a sanity saver!

Incorporating pet-friendly area rugs and mats made from synthetic fibers, such as recycled PET, polyester, or polypropylene, ensures easy maintenance and durability. Nylon rugs are colorfast and resistant to cleaning solutions, while flat weaves and low piles prevent pet nails from getting caught, making them safe choices for households with pets.

Durable paint is also a good choice in design materials when you have pets.

Choosing the right wall materials and paint finishes is essential for easy maintenance and durability. Satin or eggshell paint finishes are ideal for wiping up messes quickly, while pet-proof wallpaper options offer strong stain resistance and are easy to clean.

Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) panels are designed to withstand moisture and scratches, making them a practical choice for walls in high-traffic areas.

Countertops and cabinets should be selected for their durability and resistance to scratches and stains. Hard stone countertops, such as granite and quartzite, provide both style and functionality, while laminate countertops offer a wide range of patterns and affordability.

No matter how much I discourage my larger dogs from jumping up to put their front paws on the kitchen countertops, they still do it. So my laminate countertops are starting to show some signs of damage. Before replacing my countertops in a future renovation, I will research the scratch resistance of all my selections to make an informed decision.ย

Specialty cabinetry for pets, such as feeder station cabinets, can be incorporated into the design to accommodate furry family members’ needs. I also plan to install a foot vacuum in a cabinet to make sweeping up dog fur much easier every day.

And don’t forget about the windows!

Window treatments like sheer shades let in natural light while blocking UV rays. And cordless lift systems prevent cord-related injuries for children and pets. Smart shades offer additional safety and convenience features, including “pet mode,” for added peace of mind.

We love our pets. Wise design choices for your home help to keep the peace with your pets.

By selecting materials that prioritize durability, stain resistance, and easy maintenance, homeowners can create a stylish and functional living space that caters to their family’s and furry companions’ needs.
